Corpus or Whiting????

I don't know about the whole location based assignment thing (though I too heard the rumor). I do know that one guy in my class at Vance got P-3's and got to stay there for advanced.

Any evidence to back that up? Seriously doubtful.

The only instance I know of where this reason was explicitly stated was a friend of mine here at -35. She was looking at Helos first choice, P-3's second with a low 50 and someone in that selection group at Whiting with a very similar NSS was P-3's and then helos. They both got their second choice becasue there was one slot in the class convening the next day for Maritime advanced that needed filled. He was unable to PCS from there to here soon enough...so...

That said, while it may have happened, I have doubt seriously that it is very common.

Vance got P-3's and got to stay there for advanced.

Eeeeeek!

If you want C-130s and don't want another move, go Corpus. If you want to actually move through training and don't care about the move, go Whiting. It's way faster. For example, guys I went to API with soloed at Whiting before I had FAM 2 down here in Corpus. I have gotten canceled for weather and aircraft availability more times than I have flown down here. I am having fun here in Corpus, and my squadron rocks, but I would rather be having fun flying on more than a weekly basis.

I've heard that in general, the Whiting squadrons are more fun. I have no idea why. Perhaps having a 5000 ft runway all to yourselves has something to do with it.

I've done both, Whiting for primary, advanced in Corpus, I agree with all of the above, except the Vance thing, avoid that shit like the plague. Milton is a small town with nothing to do and Pensacola is full of rednecks. Corpus is north Mexico but it does have better nightlife.

I personally enjoyed the flying at Whiting more. Course rules are not as bad as people make them out to be and I liked chopping and flying around VFR, especially on solos. Was also nice to have multiple outlying fields to bounce at for variety. When I went through I was done primary, selected, moved, pooled in Corpus, and almost two months into advanced before the first of my API buddies who classed up a few weeks before me finished primary in Corpus, sounds like thats still somewhat the case.

Just for historical interest and perspective ... in the "old" days, Whiting wasn't P-Cola .... and having experienced 'em all .... I'd take Corpus anyway, anyday .... :)

Milton is a weird place, but you don't have to live here if you don't want too. Personally, besides having a few bars and a mall (and Starbucks for us WA coffee snobs), Pensacola isn't much better.

Study your a$$ off, know your briefing items cold from any angle, procedures, procedures, procedures ... and best of luck, no matter where you go. These will help you the most in getting Hercs.

For comparison: A buddy of mine started API two weeks before me and went to Corpus while I went to Whiting. I was house hunting in Kingsville the day he soloed

I haven't seen much of Milton other than the one time when I was on a working party before API. What I have seen is much of Corpus and I think it was a good decision to come down here...even though I would probably have soloed by now if I were in milton. Life here seems to be a tad bit slower...comparing it to what my friends tell me about milton. If you want to come down to corpus, just expect it to take some time. I've talked to a bunch of people who have been here for 9 months and still aren't done. I really don't mind the time because the extra time to study and practice on the microsims is all good as far as i'm concerned.

Scoober and I know the same person from Las Cruces. That was the story I was referring to and I have heard a couple other second hand accounts very similar to that. I agree that it is probably not that common but the chance that they can say "We don't want you to move so you can start monday" does exist.

That's a big reason why I liked Whiting. Not including the time off for Christmas, it took me just less than 5 months to finish primary. I had either a flight or a sim everyday, which I would have much rather done than having to wait 4-5 days between each event.

Concur, took me just under 5 months to finish primary at Whiting in VT-Screw. Quality of life, Corpus is the way to go, but now being at the end of a 3 year transition to the fleet I am very glad that I went to Whiting and pushed through in 5 months.

So one semi-confirmed story by another SNA. But that still doesn't make it policy. I say this so that others understand it's all rumor. Having seen how selection goes down week to week, I can say this isn't policy, at least not at Whiting.

I say Corpus, but then I'm from Texas and somewhat biased. I'm surprised by all the "Whiting...flew thru primary" vs "Corpus....took forever blah." A friend of mine from API went to Whiting while I did Corpus, I'd soloed in HTs before he was done with primary at Whiting. Whiting has A LOT more sims than Corpus, we had only 5 when I was there and one hadn't been accepted yet.

Oh, and another reason Corpus is better: the Prop Stop in -31's hangar beats the sh!t out of the snack shacks at Whiting.
