Dept of the Navy AND Marine Corps?

Hey, take a look at H.R. 346 introduced by Walter Jones (NC). It will re-designate (re-name?) the Department of the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps. According to the Honorable Mr. Jones, the change would enhance the role of the Marine Corps as an equal member of the Armed Services in the eyes of our citizens.

Oh, about10% chance of surviving.

Note: War Zone because this is from a usually reliable source, but I have not validated it, much too lazy.

I fail to see how adding three words changes anything (is there anything that needs to be changed?) ... maybe some of those with more expirence and stronger feelings on the topic have more to add, but we have a represenative on the Joint Chiefs of Staff ... oh, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is currently a Marine. I don't feel there is any inequality to address ...

Interesting that someone would mention this - there was a mention in an article in Proceedings about the changing role of the Navy in the GWOT (or whatever it's called now) and the original relationship between the Navy and the Marines. The guy was suggesting that in light of the new littoral role that the Navy needs to fill, re-establishing the old Navy-Marine relationship might be a good idea - carrying detachments of Marines on most Navy ships to engage in brief amphibious actions. That, or creating a new "naval infantry" setup. Look in the May issue for that article.

If there's an inequality issue it goes the other way. Now funding inequalities perhaps...

I'm just not seeing a platoon of Marines on every boat. Maybe a platoon per convoy or whatever you guys call groups of warships, but per boat is a bit of a waste.

Heres an interesting squib on our Naval Infantry

Marines. Navy. There, I said it. The vein on my face pops out another mm every time I see a specific service name uncapitalized.

I'm not against such an idea, but the author made it sound like the Marine Corps had become a bunch of insubordinate, fat slobs after WWII. What a weird site, and a weird bunch of commenters.

OK, you got me. I registered with that name because it seemed like everybody else did it that way. Besides, have you read the article? It's just not a real good piece of work.

Jones has been at this for some time as he tried the same thing back in 2004. I remember hearing then Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Gordon England introduce himself as the "Secretary of the Navy and Marine Corps" at a dinner meeting of the Marine Corps Aviation Association (MCAA) and acknowledge the Congressional interest in adding "Marine Corps" to his title.

We already have the Navy Marine Corps Internet (NMCI) so why not? ;)

Kidding aside, SECNAV staff is already an integrated Navy and Marine Corps entity so I see this as nothing more than a title change in recognition of reality. The Marine Corps has always been relatively smaller in numbers and budget authority (approx 14% of DoD "fiscal pie" although a lot of Navy Blue dollars are apportioned to USMC like virtually all aviation funding, medical, chaplain support, etc.), but has equal rank and stature at joint level as other services (not always the case historically). Pretty good bargain for taxpayers.

I don't understand why it matters. Several reasons that I think this:

1. Show me a citizen that knows the USMC is part of the Department of the Navy, and I'll show you a Navy/Marine Corps vet.

2. Blue/Green team on amphibs is represented by the current title. Marines who've done a MEU know what I'm talking about (constant point of contention between me and my wife. However, I find it a bit odd that GQ, At Sea Fire Party, Man Overboard, Abandon Ship, etc... ALL happen during Green hours.)

3. The USMC is a sea service, with historical close ties to the Navy. Naval Infantry is truely what we are. Always have been, always will be. Hence the reason for the DON title.

Oh, and don't get me started about that BS article on Naval Infantry. The author is forgetting about China Horse Marines (not much Navy there), the colonialism period, etc... We still rely on the Navy. The "Brown Water Navy" he's referring to is simply a re-incarnation of what happened during the Vietnam war - and the Navy is taking it over from the Marines who are currently doing the mission. SEALs weren't created in the 60's to replace Marines as the author alluded to, he forgets about UDT teams in WWII. I could go on and on and on... The guy is full of crap.
