I thought the Marines are all about tradition? ;) I don't think the change is necessary and it seems like nothing but a politically correct nod to a small constituency that for some reason considers this important. What's next, the Navy and Marine Corps Cross? The United States Navy and Marine Corps Academy?

Why not "Department of the Navy, Marine Corps, and sometimes Coast Guard"?

I think it's silly inflated self-importance. I think the notion that Rep. Walter Jones put forward that the current name of DoN is a slight to fallen Marines is a sick joke.

Of course, the chief sponsor represents Jacksonville, and was one of the drivers behind renaming the congressional menu "freedom fries", so he's certainly continuing to sponsor important substantive legislation.

What an insult!! It needs to be "Department of the Navy, Marine Corps, and sometimes Coast Guard and Merchant Marines"

Don't get me wrong, the CG loves to add a little class to the Navy whenever war is declared, but we don't want our name sullied by the association. ;)

The fighting spirit of the USCG is appropriately displayed by your service flying predominately French aircraft. As the Webmaster & Grandpa Pettinones say: 'Nuff said!

Update: This week, the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee approved its portion of the FY2011 Defense Authorization bill (H.R. 5136). Part and parcel (make note; add this to the "BLUF" List) of HR 5136 is renaming the DON to Department of the Navy and Marine Corps. Progress? Pay raise of 1.9% for AD members also in the package. Think that is .5% more than the CIC asked for? Stay tuned.
