I thought the Marines are all about tradition?
Don't they do this every year? I'm certain there was a thread on this very topic a year ago. Personally I don't see the point.
Why not "Department of the Navy, Marine Corps, and sometimes Coast Guard"?
I think it's silly inflated self-importance. I think the notion that Rep. Walter Jones put forward that the current name of DoN is a slight to fallen Marines is a sick joke.
Of course, the chief sponsor represents Jacksonville, and was one of the drivers behind renaming the congressional menu "freedom fries", so he's certainly continuing to sponsor important substantive legislation.
And besides, they'd lose their "men's department" joke...no Marine wants that.
Don't get me wrong, the CG loves to add a little class to the Navy whenever war is declared, but we don't want our name sullied by the association. Why not "Department of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard"?
