I'll be making the drive soon, if you have any advice (places to eat, staying out of trouble etc.) it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Travel in a small caravan of 3 or 4...strength in numbers...radar detectors...cheap CB radio or handhelds really help you chat along the way. Take breaks every few hours.

Audiobooks. Always keep me (relatively) sane when driving longer than a few hours.

I'll also toss in a vote for I-40.

If it takes you more than 24 hours to get here your a weakling!

My record, east coast (New England) to California (Via I-80) 50 hours. That was back in my younger days...

Sure, that's a good idea. ...Until you get pulled over by some backwater county sheriff, beaten to within an inch of your life, and charged with resisting arrest, etc., etc. Personally, I'd rather take a little more time, not get a reckless driving ticket, and arrive safely with a little buffer to find my way around town before checking in.

Good call, but I've decided to invest in the best protection from hillbilly antics

I-40 sounds like a good plan. Any idea what the travel-time difference is?(Driving from San Diego)

I dunno about 40, it would be cooler temperature-wise than deep south Texas, but the freeway through Oklahoma absolutely sucks. If you really wanna go on 40 I'd recommend getting off of 40 at Amarillo and then angling southeast on Hwy283. I can't remember the actual number of the road, but it takes you from Amarillo to Dallas. Plus, you'd completely miss Oklahoma and their devil-roads.

You would be adding several hours too (don't know the actual number). Either way, it is a fun drive, especially through the desert in a Jeep with nothing but time to kill. :)

You dont have to speed to make in 50 hours, just drive 24 hours straight sleep for an hour, and another 25 hours straight...:icon_wink

My friend IBB has clearly never seen I-10 through West Texas...:D

Oh yeah, I did 40 west to California, then 10 back from California to P-cola. I'll take west Texas over OK any day.

They were doing a good bit of road work when I went through TX with new asphalt and all so it may be different if it's been awhile since you've been there.

Yeah, thanks, Cavt, for making my last and/or next safety stand-down 20 minutes longer so they can tell my your travel technique uses poor headwork.
