Natural gas is certainly more difficult to transport than oil, but considering the infrastructure that is currently building out to support it, it looks like LNG has a future. Doesn't hurt that Poland probably wants to have an alternative source of energy and not rely on Germany or Russia.

Again, there is hope and reality. I hope that the Baltics and Poland can move further away from depending on Russia for their natural gas, like Lithuania has recently tried to do, but it would take investment and commitment that is difficult for most countries to follow through on.

I'd argue that the future of Article 5 was a thorny subject even pre-Trump. We expanded NATO post-Cold War with little thought to whether the voters of NATO countries would support going to the mat for the likes of the Baltic states. This Pew survey from 2015 showed that a majority of French, Germans, and Italians did NOT think their countries should get involved in the event Russia attacked a NATO ally. Only in the US and Canada did a majority support honoring Article 5.

I don't think NATO is at all useless, but that's a problem.

A failure to form a coalition ≠ 'turmoil in European electorates', it is actually not all that unusual for a parliament with so many parties without a majority and especially for the Kingdom of the Netherlands (which has four separate parliaments BTW).

You mean the sky isn't falling? :) However, I think everyone can agree that after an extended period of stability, Europe is having some, uh, excitement these past 24 months, the most dramatic being Brexit - and the sudden implosion of the many traditional center-right and center-left parties has been noteworthy. How serious and permanent these events are remain to be seen.

Had all kinds of model ships as a kid - in particular the ships of the line. (Now I have a print of HMS Victory in my home office.) I'm glad someone enjoys the historical nerdery - and I will say I've added a number of books recommended from these threads for my reading list to include Neptune's Inferno and Castles of Steel that I really want to get to.
