F18 Emergency Landing at Miramar Air Show

For those interested, because I've never seen this before:
I heard from a buddy who attended Friday's show that he saw an F-18 make an emergency arrested landing, hook down on the runway. I checked around and didn't find much till I saw these pictures....is this something that happens from time to time, or a rare thing?

Second post down I think

All I can tell from first hand accounts, it was one of the MAGTF demo Hornets, and from his scanner all he could tell is the pilot reported a bad indication light or warning in the cockpit, so they landed the whole demo team and then brought him in.

Pretty common. Gear issues or Hydraulic issues pretty much always warrant a field trap.

Not common, but not unheard of. It's usually done to forestall impending directional control issues or brake/hyd problems, both of which behoove you to get the jet stopped ASAP. The degree of risk involved is airframe- and situation-specific. Obviously it's not the preferred method of landing, but it's usually not a huge deal.

Downside is that the runway is fouled until the aircraft can get clear and they can reset the gear. Which may turn someone else's somewhat sketchy fuel situation into a no kidding problem.

Really sucks when you come home after a 5 hour flight and at the FAF you are told to go into the pattern because somebody had to use the gear...and then make 12-15 loops at PA because all of the pointy nose FAGs are out of fuel and have to land ahead of you...

A P-3 guy complains about a jet guy putting the A-gear out of battery . . . will wonders never cease?

And I bet you thought holding was just something sadistic instructors made students do :)

Does that do much damage to the hook, getting dragged halfway down the runway and all?

Most short-field gear is only about 1500 FT down the runway, so no. There are wear limits to the stinger, so if one were to drag it all the way down, it may (or may not) have to be replaced.

Next time you guys are doing FCLPs, I'll aim right at the A-gear for touchdown and see if I can trigger it.:p

Or, since you were smart and fly for Chopper Command, you landed directly to the taxiway and were at the club drinking a cold one before the pointy-nosed fellas even touched down.

.....only to discover that even though you took off 2 hours before the "pointy nose guys", and despite the runway delays, they beat YOU to the club by over an hour, hooked up with your girlfriend, and drank all the beer.

There are benefits to flying faster than 130 knots.

Maybe so, but it must have hurt your feelings when she asked "Is it in yet?"

Sometimes, it pays to not be a jet guy. :D

The Air Farce F-4 guys used to love to take the MORST gear at Da Nang if the runway was wet. They then logged an arrested landing.
