FY09 STA-21 Soup to selection and beyond MEGA thread

the check list is still there for me. And about the random selection, i agree because there was a person from my friends command that had no college at all and didn't have any awards.. he got chosen over two top candidates. They must have a reason but it's kind of weird to me.

What you see, and what the board sees in a package are two completely different things. Everyone has their own prejudices towards individuals. This is true of a command, however, a review board will likely see things different when conducting the final applicant interview. I'm guessing they hold a lot of weight. I highly doubt that it's a random selection as you guys seem to suggest. Granted, there will always be "that guy" that gets through, but I still have faith in the system to select the most qualified applicants. Keep in mind, that you don't always know about any dirty laundry that your compatriots have, but the review board will. Also, while you may look at a command endorsement and think wow this is awesome, there are many things that can be said to tip off a board.

Edit: Oh, and for the record, from the time the first "are the results out yet?" to the results being out were a total of 13 posts, and a month and a half wait. I refer to my earlier, take a chill post :D

What are some things you think can be said that would tip the board off? I have read my CO's letter and now I hope that he didn't go to far over the top.

the selection process of future naval officers is not random, as some may think. the best of the best are chosen...up to a point.

Wonder how many minority slots have to be filled each year...

either way, i sure would like to be a fly on the wall for just one day of these boards.

If the board is already over, does anyone know why they don't just release the results ASAP? Is it the approval of the NAVADMIN? Are we waiting for some one to type it up? Or, are they monitoring this site just laughing at us as we throw around ideas over what a checklist means? Just curious why the wait.

I am not sure the actual chain of command, however i know that they have to wait until the end of the fiscal year, and then there is an Admiral that has to sign and approve everything. from what i am told the message and everything is ready before the fiscal year ends and then the Admiral signs it. thats why even though we are told mid october, it is usually early in the month. only about 10 days left, and it feels like they are slowing down!

i applied pilot- no checklist. It seems almost the safe guess to assume those with the checklist are the selctees. It makes sense based on what i've read about previous year's "leaks" and such. No biggie for all of us without it. Time to get crackin on next years!

I applied for Pilot, and my package is closed. If you read a few posts back, an e-mail from Ed mentioned that after the board looks at your package the status changes changes to "closed". If the original checklist is still open, it either means the board hasn't looked at the package yet OR the website has not been updated to reflect the changes (most likely). The previous years' "leaks" were referring to a different checklist, listing the necessary requirements after you are selected. ...Just trying to stay optimistic! :)

I applied pilot as well have have the checklist still. However I don't think it's an indicator that I will be selected, I would be willing to bet that a good chunk of guys/gals here on AW have more competitive, more well rounded packages than mine that show package status closed. I agree with sw09 that the STA-21 website most likely hasn't been updated.

I still don't think that status closed has anything to do with selection. Last years leak was a checklist for post selection this is not. We'll all see in a few weeks.

so! how's everyone's football teams doing this season? :D Me? i'm a green bay fan. crappy, huh?

In Sacramento I'm required to be a Raiders or Niners Fan. Raiders fans are (mostly gangsters/ ghetto mofo's) and the Niners fans are a little more subdued. I'm a Niners fan just for the pleasure of smack talking all the Raiders fans.

The Raiders are sucking like always! Did you see them give up the last game...

The Niners are handling their own so far.

CNO Issues Navy's Diversity Policy

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (SW) Rebekah Blowers, Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead recently issued the Navy's diversity policy in which he urges leaders to anticipate and embrace the demographic changes of tomorrow, and build a Navy that always reflects the make up of the country.

"The purpose of this policy is to ensure that everyone in the Navy understands how I feel about diversity. I believe that diversity is the responsibility of every leader, both military and civilian. Each leader must set and live the example, as well as create an environment in our Navy where every individual's contribution is valued and respected," he said. "Most importantly, the Navy must reflect the face of the nation. When the nation looks at its Navy, it should see itself reflected back."

Leadership is the foundation upon which the Navy is built and has served as the cornerstone of success for the organization since its inception. CNO has entrusted and challenges all members of the Navy team to lead diversity efforts through leadership, mentorship, service and example.

"I want our Navy's leaders to internalize this policy and demonstrate a personal commitment to attract young men and women to the Navy, and compel them to stay Navy. For those who are currently serving in our Navy, we must mentor these young people and provide opportunities for them to reach and maximize their fullest potential," Roughead said.

CNO emphasized that we all bring abundant life experiences and perspectives, and approach challenges and problems in various ways. It is these very talents and perspectives that make the Navy so successful, he said. Diversity is a necessity to remain a competitive, relevant and strong global force for peace.

"As an organization that's diverse at all levels, infused with many perspectives, we become stronger, more talented, more capable, and more effective. At the end of the day this is what our country wants and this is what our country deserves, a Navy that is out and about doing what it needs to do with the support of its country and the strength of its diversity to move forward," Roughead said.
