FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

Does anyone know if selected for the CORE option, what determines which community option you can go into? Is it needs of the navy or is it your choice??

You will "Service Select" in the fall prior to graduation along with the nation's OCs who will be graduating with you. You'll submit a dream sheet with preferred designators ranked from 1-5 to be considered along with your evaluations and points accrued while in school. There is a thread in the NROTC section titled "Commissioning Formula for Rankings" with a lot of good gouge. The exact numbers may have changed somewhat since the original post but it gives you a good idea of how it works.

I've seen some CORE OCs roll through under the radar only to have it burn them come service selection time. "Target" option OCs can get away with just showing up (especially at a large unit like SD), but I don’t recommend CORE OCs do the same. Achieving a high GPA, great PFA scores, and positive unit involvement will help maximize the likelihood of getting your first choice. At the end of the day however, the needs of the Navy trump all (especially nuke needs).

So is everyone checking in on Sunday the 21st? That's what I'm planning. Do we get time to unpack and everything? Does everything start Monday morning? I'm starting to get nervous!!

Haubby and Jet Jockey:

Thank you for your feedback! The Chapter 33 will cover all of my tuition with MECP i'm only out the cost of books per semester, a fee I can live with. I chose to go with the MECP program because there is little to no military oversight while in school (a big bonus), both programs do have identified alternates which was definitely a concern of mine. One of those STA-21 Nurse Corps alternates got a good phone call last week ;-)

Good luck to all!!

Monday is Presidents Day, so you should have that day off. I went around Newport and walked the Cliff Walk which was awesome. There is nobody around Monday as far as oversight, so you just have to be back at midnight. Then Tuesday starts nice and loud nice and early (I think it was 0400).

seriously though... I looked at the website and it didnt list a whole lot. I am planning on just bringing what was on the list. As for uniforms I wasnt going to bring any. I just figured they would make you buy new stuff anyways.

I would recommend checking in during daylight hours (before 1500) just so that you can drive around and not get lost at night.

Few questions:
For PT since we're going to be rolling around in goose crap and it's going to be cold as hell, are we supposed to bring our Navy PTU and the sweats we were given in bootcamp? Are you allowed to do the morning PT in anything else?

Anyone know of military thrift stores around the Hampton Roads area? Trying to save as much as possible on uniforms.

Just an FYI to all....If you have a NMRS Thrift shop you may be able to pick up most of your uniforms (in excellent condition) before even reporting for way less money and pocket the rest of the uniform allowance. That's what I did, just had to pay to get a few tailored down a bit.
