Just an FYI to all....If you have a NMRS Thrift shop you may be able to pick up most of your uniforms (in excellent condition) before even reporting for way less money and pocket the rest of the uniform allowance. That's what I did, just had to pay to get a few tailored down a bit.

edit: List of locations http://www.nmcrs.org/thriftshop.html

Thats some good gouge, i think ill try and hit up the annapolis one for some academy drop out uniforms.

Got the choker whites (including shoes), a few sets of kahkis, and SDBs that way. Also brought the CNT whites I already owned. Instead of paying $40+ for a new set, I spent $5 to get the loops and collar boards put on.

Does MECP time count for retirement/AD pay purposes? STA-21 does...

did you read this whole thread? http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144972&p=596141&viewfull=1#post596141

Check this out.... http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/cpque...r_n=hr288.111&db_id=111&item=&sel=TOC_480067&

kind of sucks for the FY-10 and beyond class, but you'll still get bars. To the poster who asked about the choice between MECP and STA-21, I'd sit down and look at the pay vs. time in (if the MECP counts towards retirement).

Few questions:
For PT since we're going to be rolling around in goose crap and it's going to be cold as hell, are we supposed to bring our Navy PTU and the sweats we were given in bootcamp? Are you allowed to do the morning PT in anything else?

If you bring your PT gear that will save you from having to buy new PT gear once you're there. I would either bring your gear or buy some once there before your early Monday morning rolls around. You will be wearing PT gear until your khaki uniforms are ready and also be wearing PT gear for every PT session (at least my NSI class did). They enforce the flag conditions (green, yellow, black) very strictly there so with it being cold you can expect to PT inside the small gym which sucks. We ran our first PRT in the damn thing. A mile and a half is like 26 laps, not cool. Good luck!

The Thrift Store is a great idea if you want to save some money on uniforms. In the Hampton Roads area Oceana and Little Creek had a good stock of items for those of you in that area. If you have a Seabag and don't want to buy a new one, bring yours up. That will save you $15 or so. Looking back on my experience I would suggest showing up to Newport early and hit the Thrift Store. It was located at the corner of Meyer Kord Ave and Peary St. when I was there. They always had a TON of basically brand new uniforms from the OCS drops. You could get nearly everything you need there for very little AND not have to stand in line with 60 other guys all trying to get the same stuff.

Thanks for that, do you have to wear official navy PT gear or can you bring and wear your own? Bc they only make you buy 2 sets so I don't see that lasting more than 2 days or 2 pt sessions... And I would like to not have 5 sets of Navy PT gear I'll be trying to avoid wearing for the rest of my career. Based on my Navy experience with this crap I'm assuming you are supposed to wear Navy PT gear but there's a small hope still in my mind... Did you wear your sweats from bootcamp?

You wear the Navy issue stuff when you PT with the group. You are going to wear that stuff all through ROTC as well. I think that we PT'd three days a week in NSI, so two sets is doable if you like doing laundry every day.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me how boot camp-ish NSI is going to be? is smoking allowed? How strict are they on weigh-in day? thanks in advance for the help/advice.

You smoke AND you are worried about weigh-ins? Gonna be a tough 8-weeks for you.

It's all dependent. Two years ago there were a couple who were overweight and stayed in the program. If your grossly overweight then its a different story. But like I said it's all dependent on who's conducting the weigh-in.

Yes, you can smoke. There was a designated smoking area by the water between the barracks and the galley. Have fun freezing your face off out there. It's not like boot camp, it's a bit more like A-school (at least it seemed that way to me), except they can and will beat you. If you fail the weigh-in and body fat composition, you're done. There may have been a few exceptions, but that's generally how it goes. There are plenty of posts on the website that describe what NSI is like. From reading your posts, it sounds like you have a "great" attitude going in to this too. I wouldn't worry about it, you're too SWOsome for them to do anything to you anyway.

NSI Question

Hey I'm an "overweight" chain smoker that has problems with people that outrank me and tell me what to do. will i have a problem at NSI????

Now for my real question......in your first couple of weeks do they allow you to leave your room and go to the gym or are you restricted to a certain area? also did you guys that went through already have to memorize code of conduct, general orders etc? Thanks for the help homeboys and girls!
