As a commercial airline captain, I usually forbade any discussions involving politics and religion on my flight deck. I made sure my F/Os knew, my jumpseaters knew, and my flight attendents knew.
I found political and religion arguments very distracting, pointless, and indeed could impact the safety of flight.
However discussions about sex were often/usually allowed... even the licentious kinky ones. So while perhaps a bit distracting, nevertheless unlike politics, most all participants were commonly interested and seemingly in some agreement on the subject . Whenever this occurred, I found all were mostly on the same page of this happy albeit prurient, conversational intercourse....and far less contentious than even discussing favorite sports' teams.
How's that for smug?

How come all of the FAs are gay dudes or menopausal pissed off chicks? What happened to all of the hot 20 something’s that I was promised in movies? Sorry, please resume energy policy and Middle East politics.
Yeah, you're right. I guess I was just leaning back reminiscing about the days when we flew and laid-over together all month. And especially when our flight attendants had weigh-ins every month. If they didn’t make skinny weight, they were grounded till they did! They all were “built for speed” and most all female.
Of course they also were mostly blonde, in their twenties, with formidable racks, and didn’t know or care shit-from-shinola about politics or religion. Ahhhhh…. But sex…..yes they could carry a good conversation about that!
OK. Sorry for the distraction. I will crawl back into by old geezer and curmudgeon cave now. But oh, the stories I could tell! The Golden Days of Aviation!
Fog, you're always starting arguments like this with inflamatory statements about Islam this or conspiracy that. You have to know that guys are going to call you on it. If you're not interested in defending your position without dismissing people's views by calling them smug (or a prick), then what's the point?

1. As has been mentioned, even if we become totally oil independent, nevertheless if a terrorist blows up the Saudi Oil Fields, (which in our lifetime is more likely than not) our price for oil and gasoline will still skyrocket! Relying upon our own oil and refining does not solve our potential future problems.
2. I had dinner last night with a good friend I have known for 20 years. He is a superb veterinarian treating our big Labradors and pesky cats for years. He is also a widely respected community leader and philanthropist. But he grew up in the Mideast. He is also a practicing Muslim in a local Mosque. So should I now suddenly fear – or at least, un-friend him for that?

First let me apologize to all for getting over-heated last evening. This stuff isn't personal.
Re Catmando's points (1) but at least we're not financing terrorists when we produce & refine our own oil - and we're creating American/Canadian jobs; and (2) I, too, have known, & still am friends with, Americans from the Mideast & Iran who are classic american success stories & wonderful human beings . . . and there is a reason they're here and not there . . . and, yes, they're still practicing Muslims.
Producing more petroleum domestically is a good thing, but it doesn't mean that we can allow chaos in the Middle East, as that will affect global prices (as has been discussed). The percentage of oil that the US imports from the Arabian Gulf is relatively small and continues to decrease. Stability in the Middle East is a desirable thing for a lot of reasons not having to do with oil. That's why we continue (and will for the foreseeable future) to expend our resources to maintain a presence there.
