That thing is just scary. I wonder how one gets that kind of leisure time prior to age 65. There's got to be some weird pathology there. If he's married, his wife would be busting his ass to go take out the trash every 5 minutes. If he's single, well, it's just another sad, lonely weekend in the basement, playing with tiny little people.

That is jsut a breathtaking model. Of course I seriously think this guy needs to not only drink a pint or two but pick up a girl along the way.

My favorite model is still this one at the National Air and Space Museum: http://dcpages.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=National-AIr-and-Space-Museum&id=Dsc05860

Totally agree. Had to stop and look at it once again when I visited the museum a few weeks ago.

Agree that it's "technically" not allowed, but as with everything else you bring with you to the aircraft, you're kind of on the honor system.

Hence the quotes....and the comment about it on my boot. :)

I still carry a mini one on my keychain. After 9/11, I have to detach it for airline travel, but I have a leatherman of either size always within reach (except on airliners)

RIGHT .... wish WE could still have ours. Plus our 4" knives. And screwdrivers. I.e., somthing you can fight with ....

Those are some of the things "they" took away from us post 9/11. Kind of funny when you think about it --- as I have the "keys to the car" .... bureaucrats. Love 'em or hate 'em.... same difference.

navyao-Did you use the Hasegawa or Revell/Monogram F-14D? The Hasegawa kits are a pain in the a**, but the end result is worth it. Actually I think my next project might be the VF-101 last Tomcat demo a/c. I just got to finish all these Hornets....

Dan,

I built the Hasegawa F-14D and you're right it was a pain in the butt! I didn't help things much though I used a lot of aftermarket resin; Black Box Bombcat cockpit, resin landing gear wheel wells and resin LAU-138 missle rails. Here's a link of the finished product:

I used the Two Bob's VF-101 Grim Reapers decals from the second to last demo flown by them. I recently finished a 1/72 scale "D" modeled after the last Tomcat demo in 05' and used the retro scheme, I should post some pics of it. We're probably boring these guys with this stuff, so hit me on email if you want. This is my outlet know that I'm not turning wrenches anymore.

^Damn dude, thats an awesome job. I'm planning on getting back into modeling now that I'm not moving every 7 months. Don't think I'll ever get one that nice though.

Dude...when did modeling become so damn critical...I loved this guy's post...I never EVER want to be that detailed on anything. He should have married my wife...jeez.:icon_wink

AO, very nice build on that tricky Hasegawa kit. Nice touch using the intake covers. Those intakes are a real bear. I’m curious to know what aftermarket items you used. There is definitely a resin pit in there, Black Box perhaps? The deck section is a nice touch, as is the pilot & RIO in desert flight suits. I think you can’t go wrong with VF-Decals & Sprue Bros.

My only comments are stemming from the fact I actually photographed that actual aircraft in OCT of 2004. It looks like you painted it overall ghost grey. 164 was in the 3-tone tactical scheme. Take a look at theses pics, & you can see the demarcation line of the medium gray upper surfaces & the dark ghost sides:

Also, notice how small the ECM fairing on the glove vane is, & that it doesn’t extend that far back along the leading edge of the glove vane.

There two things about this aircraft that make it an interesting individual subject to model, that you have to have proof for people to believe you.

First, the outside skin of the boarding ladder was gloss gull gray:

Also, the corrosion control guys painted the national insignia upside down on the left wing:

Still, overall a good build.

I ran into a few of those guys at air shows in Japan. "This is PR 33, was deployed in Bahrain last year, yes?". "Uhhhh........I have to go on a break......" :D

Hey thanks a lot, I really appreciate that. I hope you find the time to get back into it, it can be both frustrating and relaxing depending on how the kit's going together.

That's less the modelers and more the plane spotters.

Several years ago, after the Kosovo dust-up, we had to get one of our jets home without a probe (NOT my squadrons fault!). So, as a two ship, two day trip we did Aviano to Lakenheath to Kef to Greenland to Labrador to Brunswick home to Navy Andrews. Went into the break at Lakenheath and there were a couple cars at park at the end of the runway. We were on deck maybe an hour, long enough to put 23,000 lbs in two jets and thank, but unfortunately decline the F-15 wing commanders offer of free Guinness on tap. By the time we left there must have been 100 cars at the departure end. Clearly very networked and committed groups to get organized and arrive just to see a couple fighting drumsticks depart.

Great trip though and if you ever have a chance to do a translant without tankers do so. You also get a chance to land in Savan fjord Greenland about 60 miles above the Artic Circle. Not a common tacair check in the box.
