International Burn a Qu'ran Day

By some thoughts, me saying "Violent extremist muslims are assholes" could be constrained as "endangering the troops"

Where would you draw that line, even if it were illegal?

I suspect there would be much more outrage over a flag burning than someone saying, "I hate extremist Christians who burn the Koran." (And yes, I know there certainly are flag burnings.) It just isn't the same thing. You can say that you hate the bear, but that's very different and far less dangerous than poking him with a sharp stick. This is insanity. It's provocation, pure and simple. You can argue about whether it should be provocation, and what the fact that it *is* provocation to violence says about those would would resort to that, but the fact remains that this will potentially get people killed. It will be used as propaganda against us and ours and as a recruiting tool to find more terrorists. it will make things worse, plain and simple. The violent, extremist imam's are salivating over this. They couldn't be happier because this makes every declaration that the U.S. is at war against Islam look all the more true. When you actions delight those guys, I think you have to stop and ask yourself just WTF you are doing.

So these potential Koran burners can stand on their supposed moral high ground because they do have very right to do this, or they can do the right thing and put their stick away and let the bear remain only as pissed off and dangerous as he already is.

If you download the ancient Persian versian your Kindle is holy--even if you can't read it.

It seems like endangering troops is some sort of treason--is there a loophole in the Constitution for that?

But Mohammed was Arab....

Just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean doing it doesn't make you an asshole.

So let me broach this question - if the government were to step in and force this guy stop, citing public good (the yelling FIRE in a movie theater example), then where do we draw the line? Or better yet, say he backs down on his own, due to pressure from the government and community. What if the South Park guys want to do something on their show that would be disrespectful of Mohammad and vocal members of the Muslim world make the same threats we have seen surrounding this book burning - do we shut down the South Park guys? What if someone wants to print a book that's highly critical of Islam?

Are we setting ourselves up for a slide down a slippery slope that results in there being ONE group for which no criticism can be leveled against?

I completely agree, burning books is stupid. What this pastor is doing is insensitive and he's a major asshole. But, should he be stopped, or simply ignored?

I don't think any government agency can do anything about it for the exact reasons you state. It is going to be up to the public to find a creative way to keep it from happening. That, or up to the press to use the gatekeeping power that they possess to let this go by with no attention, but Im not holding my breath on that one.

I think it is okay for Mohammad to be shown on SOuth Park, but not okay for this nutjob to burn the Koran...why? I don't know but I think it has to do with the fact that Southpark doesn't do it do spout their superiority in religion politcis, etc...they do it to put EVERYONE on an equal plane and force you to realize how pointless it all is...plus I like South Park and dislike Evangelicals. (Evangelicals are crueler and more judgemental than South Park)

So if its this guy Jone's right to stand on a corner and light a book on fire, is it my right to stand beside him with a bucket of water to douse it out as soon as its lit?

It should be stopped, not by the government, but by public pressure.

I think I just might agree with you, but I would ask you to clarify.

Are you talking about the right to build a Mosque in a location where the vast majority of Americans do not want it built, while in total agreement there is the right to build the mosque where ever you chose?

Or are you referring to the dipstick in Florida that wants to burn a book, albeit a special book, while he has that absolute right, common sensibilities say he should not burn the book(s)?

Guess it makes no difference which of the two, for I would defend with my very life "your" right to do either, while at the same time I would caution the exercise of that right, in both cases, if the result would cause the harm generally acknowledged. In both cases I believe the Government cannot force the issue, but public pressure should.

Just my .02c worth.

This may fall under the rubric of "... neither of politics nor religion speak ... "

I take offense to your statement. As an Evangelical, I do not consider myself cruel nor judgemental, nor do most people that know me..

Would you say that because I am a Jew, you like South Park more than you like me, and on that basis alone?

And of course, we have defended 'their' right ... many times.

Really?
you have never seen a group of Evangelicals yell 17 year old girls walking out of abortion clinics?
You have never seen them yell at people walking into bars?
You have never seen them spew hatred towards gays, Muslims, Jews?
Most are pro death penalty and anti Euthanasia. How is it okay to kill one group and not another? isn't Murder forbidden by that same bible?
The "Group" as an entity has become a political organization not a Religious one.
