What does the constellation of stars mean? I forgot all that after I made First Class Boy Scout in 1967.
Star pattern of the southern cross, Pacific, where the old Raiders made their bones in WWII?

It is from the original Marine Raider patch, just without the skull, the current Regiment has a similar patch:

The 'dagger' is the Fairbairn-Sykes knife that was used by commandos in World War II and is used in the insignia of several special force/commando units that originate from that time and afterwards to include the the UK's 3 Commando Brigade, the Dutch Korps Commandotroepen, the Australian Commando Regiments, the Norweigan Forsvarets Spesialkommando and the Singaporean Special Operations Force among many others.

I'm a little disappointed in my fellow militaria nerds here...;)

My impression is the Raiders were going for a big, bold and awesome insignia that was BUDweiser-esque but kind of whiffed it.

Maybe a matter of taste, but it looks pretty good in real life! There are a couple of former CSOs at NASC right now.

Hey, I just answered the basic question. Besides, you didn’t tell us about the birdy on the emblem! ?

About a billion years ago I was a “Recon” Marine and did all the para/scuba high speed sort of stuff. We did just fine without all the uniform bling and I am kind of ashamed someone in the Corps thought this was necessary. Next the Devil Dogs will be wearing “tabs” like the army.

I imagine it was due to standing up MARSOC and they didn't like being the only dudes around SOCOM without a high-speed warrior pin.

The subtle IDGAF relayed by mixing subdued and shiny warfare pins. ?

It's been forever since I cared, but I didn't think NA wings had a shiny vs non-shiny version like the enlisted warfare devices do/did (the pewter vs shiny finishes). The wings are either shiny or they're patina'ed (if true gold), but the uniform choice (khaki vs whites) doesn't "legally" affect the choice of device finish.

Yes, I know there are also actual subdued wings for cammies that are black-ish, but I'm not talking about those.

Vanguard sells wings in both "standard gold finish" and "antique finish". I always wore the bright anodized wings from The Marine Shop.

Only time I’ve seen that dark finish was 2 Army guys prior Navy guys. 1 Nuke same dark finish, 1 SWO pin same dark finish both wearing them on their Army uni
