Nope. If you go aboard a CV, you are flying aboard an Aircraft Carrier, not a "Carrier Aviation". You took the designations of various ships and provided the meaning of the designation letters without explaining what the ship was which isn't always clear. If someone is trying to learn what the ships are, you befuddled the explanatiuon by being too literal. A CVE is an Escort Carrier not a "Carrier Aviation Escort" and a CG is a Guided-missile Cruiser, not a "Cruiser Gudied Missile". If you wanted to provide both explanations; great, but you didn't. Answers should clear things up, not confuse the issue.

You may have a point. I thought that he wanted to know the origin of the designations so I listed where the designation came from originally. I assumed that he knew what they ment, but didn't know where they came from.

Then I DO WIN the BEER and you're buyin' ... as the FASRON salute has obviously been copied and is also known south of 'de Border as the "Mexican Air Force salute". Don't forget to turn the palms upward while shrugging ... :)

Close enuf... Oak Harbor Tavern work for you? Haven't been there since '69 but back then it was a good place for beer, cribbage, and pool. The owner was a HUGE Packers fan and Dallas Cowboys shirts weren't advised, as he was also just HUGE...

I was flying with a NATOPS instructor when he called out traffic. I responded with "tally" and was then asked "wait, what? Does that mean you have him in sight?" He wasn't being a dick or anything... just didn't understand the terminology. I believe he was a P-3 guy, but I may be mistaken.

Why does this not surprise me? I've noticed two kinds of P-3 guys, those that knew their platform and those that just seemed to get by. When I was in the ITU, I heard a Marine ask a P-3 guy what kind of counter-measures he had onboard (ALE-29/39s if I'm not mistaken, but if I am, at least I'm close). The response was a blank stare and a "I don't know." He had only been out of the community for less than 6 months. How about at least "flares and chaff?"

My onwing in Primary (a Cobra guy) always taught me not say Tally to ATC because you'd sound like "that guy." I've sense flown w/ him as an IP and caught him saying it, so I guess it's all relative.

I'm sure that the information I provided was correct. If you want to edit my post because you want SoG to figure it out on his own fine. I have no problem with that. Don't say that I don't know what I'm talking about. I can back-up everything I posted with plenty of references and a direct quote from a member of my American Legion Post who we videotaped discribing his experiences on the USS Card in WWII.

Spoon feeding time for the perpetually slothful.........

Current US Navy Ship Classifications
Inactive Ship Classifications

Navy Aircraft Squadron Classifications
Navy Aircraft Designations

So how will the F-35 be desginated for the Marines AV-35? or FV-35? Or will it just stay the same?

OK, you're on. There's a newer Cretin's over on 16th. I've only been to the old one several years ago. "Rick" sounds right, although I wouldn't bet my next paycheck on it... Wait... I'm retired, I don't get a paycheck anymore:(.
