That DI is no longer at OCS. The chief in that video is not intimidating at all, but he's not at OCS, either.

Quite a bit has changed since then. I almost burst out laughing at the compliment toward the end because that will never happen at OCS (at least it didn't for any of us). The quality of the filming made me think it was shot in the 80s, but I guess I was mistaken.

I watched that after I took the ASTB too, funny stuff. I actually heard that something like 48% DOR. A friend whos an NFO said a guy in his class DOR'ed in the first hour of OCS - crazy.
It varies class to class. Our class had 0 DORs from people who were still in the training pipeline. There might have been a couple who went to H for various reasons and eventually quit, but I have no idea.

Okay, what does YP and DI stand for?!

YP = Yard Patrol Craft - the little (108') vessel you're seeing in the videos. Apparently they were used at OCS - but I can't speak on that. We use them at the Academy for several classes as well as summer training.

DI = Drill Instructor.

Yea, that's not in OCS anymore. It's a shame, since it would be pretty useful for learning moboards and navigation a bit better. Then again, it'd only be useful for the SWOs, which was only like 25% of our class.

It was only useful to escape OCS for 2 days.

I don't plan on going SWO, but at some point YP's are in everyone's curriculum at the Academy. Despite not wanting to go SWO, I think what I've learned in terms of just basic seamanship was well worth the time I spent on them. What I think has been the most beneficial though has been gaining confidence in giving orders, being able to think on your feet quickly, and just general Naval leadership that you gain by being the Con or OOD. That's not to mention all the Navigation experience you get either.

The entire time at OCS we are tested to think on our feet quickly and project confidence. Every other phrase out of the DI's mouth was "ARE YOU BEING SWEET TO ME?! CRAWL THAT WAY!" and "WHY ARE YOU ALL MOVING ALL SLOW AND LAZY LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING?" The leadership stuff comes as section leader and in candio phase. Honestly, basic leadership principles, proper military protocol/uniform wear, and better physical fitness is about all I can say I truly learned at OCS. I don't really think being on the YP would add anymore to the leadership training, but it also wouldn't detract from it.

Most pilots, NFOs, Intel, SPECWAR, Supply, and CEC guys will never use any of the nav information in their careers. Pilots and NFOs maybe once they're up for command of a carrier, but by then you'll have forgotten it. I'm not quite sure how useful it'd be to us sub guys, either.

It was only useful to escape OCS for 2 days.
A welcome "vacation," for sure.

18 Members we know about so far:

10 - SNA
5 - SNFO
1 - Supply
1 - Intel
1 - SWO

VERY heavily stacked for aviation.

Gunny Irwin was the senior class DI at OCS when I was there in '01. One of his classes from a few months earlier had bought him an olde English Bulldog complete with all the slober and what not. He named it Admiral Stockdale. The dog lived with him ove in the House of Pain. If you didn't salute the Admiral, you were toast. When we were getting mashed in the SUYA, the dog thought it was playtime and would lick your face while you were doing 8 count bodybuilders, right after he had licked his balls.

Gunny Erwin's last class was the one before me (they were 29-01, I was in 01-02). He was great once you were secured. Junior classes, on the other hand, feared him and SSGT Roquemore above all else.

Wow. So I guess what Gunny J. said was true.... Newport OCS IS easier than Pensacola.... Not trying to start this debate again, but damn.

I don't recall a SINGLE class in Pensacola that didn't have at least a couple DORs on day one. That was a fact of pride for gunny's (and even candios). To see how many they could get to DOR on day one (or on wakeup wed for the gunny's).

I remember people DOR-ing only hour or two into OCS. Girls crying. No shit.

Every class after ours had a few in the first week. We were just stubborn. Or stupid. Or both.

As far as easier/harder...From what our LT described, the main difference is chow hall.

This video looks like it has bits and pieces of what I saw at my recruiter's office. I vaguely remembering the dude driving through the gate at NASP and asking where OCS was, and then saying to the DI "Say, sarge! When do I get my Tomcat?"

When I was a Candi-O I got a guy to DOR before he even made it into the Regiment building. He burst into tears and quit.

He probably could have used a viewing of the actual AOCS video. It's called Pressure Point, and the latest version (90ish) featured GySgt Holt (the AntiChrist). I looked briefly, but couldn't find it.
