^^^Pay attention Ryan. ^^^ This isn't like any other web forum you have been on. Because I am a nice guy I will ignore your slam of Bunk and answer your question. In Naval Aviation you will learn a skill set and become proficient at operations that an Air Farce pilot never will. That isn't to say most AF guys couldn't ever learn the same things. But they never will get a chance. An AF guy doesn't learn anything tactically that is different from a Navy guy. And as far as basic flying, he learns nothing a civilian pilot doesn't know how to do. A TACAIR Navy guy will land on ships. But even Helo and P-3 guys in the Navy operate very very differently then the AF. You can not compare P-3 operations to an AF C-130 . In short, a Navy guy can do everything an AF guy can but an AF guy can't do everything a Navy guy can. Now apologize to Bunk.

The USAF lawn dart pilots in Misawa didn't believe that we would fly a P-3 300' over the water at night!

Im guessing you didn't read above after his post...I did apologize

The absolute best advice I can give you, whether you end up choosing Navy or Air Force, is to always stay respectful when you're talking with someone. It doesn't matter if they are officers, enlisted, or civilians, because keeping a respectful tone will you get miles towards your goal, while disrespect can send you miles backwards from achieving your goal.

As for the Navy verse the Air Force, it's a personal preference. You'll hear a lot of jokes between the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines, but keep in mind it's all a part of inter-service rivalry and all in good nature. If I were you I would stop by the recruiters office and see if they can't arrange tours of nearby bases or something to that affect so you can get a better idea of what suits you.

And if you decide to go Navy and a NROTC program isn't available, you can either do BDCP(sp?) or OCS.

In a few weeks I'm going to a few different places around the east coast to tour. Starting with an AF base in San Antonio but I'm really looking forward to the Naval base in Pensacola

There's a little joke about the Navy and Air force Bases. When building bases and high value assets, the Navy always builds mission critical facilities, such as docks, first. When the Navy runs out of money and goes to Congress for more funding for MWR facilities, they get denied since they already have the mission critical assets in place.

The Chair Force, on the other hand, builds all their MWR facilities first, such as golf courses, pools, and gyms, and they run out of money before building their mission critical facilities, such as their runways. As such, when they ask for more money, they get it so they can build the runways.

And without further adieu, I present to you the Air Force's prototype aircraft carrier, expected completion date 2010.

(sorry for the picture size, I'm having trouble getting it to resize in the post)

Moral of the story; when you get onto the bases, don't be dazzled by public relations and MWR gigs. Pay attention as best you can to how each service operates and the atmosphere on base. And try to find people who have spent 10-20 years in each service and talk to them. Family friends are usually a good bet.

Hey, where do I get the Aircrew wings then?! :D
I want to put some credibility behind my B.S. opinions!!
I think we are all looking forward to a good 3 day weekend!

Aircrew are a different breed, like the red headed step child. I've spent many a flight hour and on a bar stool with my aircrew. Crazy folk them aircrew :D And yes, your opinion is BS.

And that naval aviator should have thrown his ass out of the plane.

I love how you talk as if:

A- You're already a Naval Aviator, who actually knows what he's talking about

B- As if you've ever been in the cockpit during a 0/0 landing, and it's a breeze

Is a 0/0 landing as scary as a night carrier landing? Probably not, but I don't know; I've only been in the cockpit for the former not the latter, but to act like you wouldn't have white knuckles in the process shows you don't understand the situation

FWIW, join the Navy. Why join a service you're already talking shit about?

I don't know why I feel the need to respond to this thread. I'm certainly in enemy territory.

Why do ROTC & UPT students feel the need to comment on the differences in the services? I've been an operational pilot in the AF for four years and I admit I'm woefully out of my depth on the subject. From my limited perusing of this site, I know there are plenty of people who'd served in joint billets who can offer something based on experience, why not let them be the ones to speak?

I agree, wow, there is not much to say to that. You are completely right, however, I think it is good to have whomever give their own experiences to at least give the kid and idea of what the Navy has to offer, but these posts sometimes do get off from the main subject, fast.

I just stopped in this thread for a quick “look see”… Ryan, pay close attention here, some “heavy hitters” have responded to try and help you. This IS a naval aviation forum attended by lots of VERY knowledgeable folks. Make no mistake about that! They can lead you to the water, young man, but they can’t make you drink. And by the way… I wouldn’t trade even one minute served in the Navy for anything!
