Would it be for the 'strength of the nation' this time, or something more personal?
So, Trump. Got it, and I’m fine with that - we all have our partisan reactions. That said, all parades, are “ostentatious” as are firework displays and lining streets with national flags, that’s why we do it. As for a reason…it is a big series of birthdays for the armed forces and the nation over the next few years. Back in 1976 the decision was made to make every 100th and every 50th national birthday a big deal so that most people would be alive to enjoy at least one in their lifetime.

Don't reflexively assume that I am reflexively object to something because 'Bad Man BAD'! I have zero issues with the Army having a nice parade for their 250th birthday, buuut....I would object to ostentatious display like the Desert Storm victory parade when there is no real reason for it.

I understand what you wrote and I honestly don’t doubt you, but clearly you can see what I was hitting at.

But let’s just be honest. The complaints here have ZERO to do with DC street damage or cost to the military. We know what tracks and weights need to be used on a tank so that it doesn’t damage the streets - we’ve done it before. If defense costs were an issue I’m sure you’d support eliminating such ostentatious programs like the Blue Angles, Thunderbirds, USMC silent drill team and other things like parachute demonstration teams - and military flyovers at sporting events - right? Equally, if this is really a logistical issue for Defense then I support firing every admiral, general, and O-6 who clearly must have allowed our military to deteriorate to a point we can’t move a few thousand people and a handful of vehicles a few hundred miles.

I do agree (as noted in the article I link) that big parades are usually for big victories - but I’d count the creation of the nation as one of those moments. Does every Army birthday parade require a national show of power? No, no it does not. This one, however, is a planned event like the eventual tricentennial (that I really, really doubt I’ll live to see).

You believe what you want to believe, rational arguments notwithstanding.

I’m OK if people hate this idea because Trump is the POTUS…I get it that people have their views. That said, I’ve yet to hear a rational argument against this parade based off existing facts of past events.

Celebrating the 250th is actually a legit reason compared to the one he wanted in 2018. Not denying that. I’m interested to see the scope of what’s being asked for. And I still maintain that there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth from every unit “asked” to participate, because we all know how much “fun” these are. And that’s a nonpartisan view.

You sure about that?

I think this is accurate. Especially the “fun” part.

There is a HUGE contingent from the National Historical Society at Yorktown and Williamsburg as far as planning goes for the 250th Celebration. Until recently, the French government was also playing a significant roll, seeing as how we won the Revolutionary War with a lot of help from them. The academics and historians want to see the partnership continue, but apparently, politics is getting in the way.

Honesty, the 250th anniversary of the Victory at Yorktown (Oct 19, 1781) in 6 years should probably be an epic celebration.

I was there (Yorktown) for the 200th with my high school drill team and band. It was amazing! For such a tiny place it was welcoming and just a perfect honor to be there. The French will be there regardless of Trump.

Despite what will undoubtedly be the best efforts of the elites to make it partisan and all about them, I hope it is an event every American can enjoy.

I do feel sorry for the planning staffs and troops involved, as it will likely be a huge flail to get through for them.

Haven’t seen enough facts posted about this alleged event to have more of an opinion than that.

How about the optic of spending tens of millions of dollars on what is very clearly a vanity project, all while citing "efficiency" and cost-cutting priorities when slashing vital programs and firing thousands of mission essential federal workers. They can't have it both ways.

How about the optics of spending millions of dollars every year on service vanity projects like the Blue Angles and others? If you are a genuine “cost warrior” focused on efficiency then yes…cut it all including the parade. But we are all smart enough here to know that is not what is going on inside this discussion.
