Part of the reason I got out of AFROTC was because I was not about to bust my arse and suck up to get a pilot spot so I can kill myself in B.F.E. Texas so that I could fly something from a trailer in B.F.E. Texas. Needless to say, I agree with you.
I disagree. Tactical UAVs are operating at the altitudes that rotary wing routinely operates at. I would almost argue that they are MORE dangerous, because they are operated by guys who have ZERO understanding of airspace. I lost count after using both my fingers and toes of how many near-midairs I had with the small tactical ones.Tactical UAVs are one thing - the very low altitudes and very slow speeds they fly at means they're not as dangerous to everyone else. But big-boy UAVs (Preds, Reaper, etc) are flying up in big-boy airspace with everyone else.
Texas isn't that bad come on; well maybe west Texas! Better TX then in the middle of the desert in AZ or NV.
Bottom line, I think a bunch of ppl in this thread are getting their panties in a bunch for nothing. Majority of you have no clue how our present day UAS system works and the safeguards built into it...UAS is here to stay, they are professionals, and as we are continuing to learn, the UAS platforms aren't the end all that we always thought them to be, and can't replace manned aircraft in all mission sets.
But once again, you only reinforce my point. The higher Tier UAS platforms are most definitely NOT requiring stick and rudder skills, and are directly designed to go to point A and ORBIT. Managing and moving those assets is akin to a watch floor organization with a superb top down view of the battle space moving those units about. Come on now, airspace as we have it currently utilized is NOT rocket science.Maybe so, but we are talking about what hapens once the guys flying the UAVs have much less training, and no time in an actual airplane.
IMHO... I think the current asspain Marine Harrier & Hornet JO pilots are going through is as bad as AF dudes getting sent UAVs...
SF
among other things... but yea, train a dude for 3+ years only to send him to an IA billet right out of the RAG, or worse, at his 2yr mark right when he's getting comfortable in the jet & at a time where he should be getting quals. What ass-pain is that, IA's?
I bounced with one in the pattern at CRP post hurricane Ike. Disconcerting, at best. Really effing hard to see, too.
