WRT da ribbons, for those who may not know, CNIC issued an awards memo earlier in the year for all shore installations (I believe it was for ALL) to receive...hmmmm... I wanna say a MUC. I'll track down the msg and post later in the week if people actually care. I just wasn't sure if things like that, or the GWOTSM are issued to school commands. I know some Ensigns that role through with more then the pizza stain on their uniform may also have received their rifle and pistol bit. Speaking of which, if there are Navy personnel who wanna earn em and haven't yet, shoot me a PM. Once in a while we will go down to the range for quals, depending on course a few different issues I won't post here. If interested, shoot me yer info and I'll let you know via global, when the next time we are gonna go. Just fyi, the shooting is done over at NASK.

like to see a copy of that message, if it happened before september, then I am an E-6....LOL

MUC is not a personal award so wouldn't count towards your final multiple.

As for the GWOTSM, you have to actually go over there. I didn't get mine issued until I was over there the first time. Sucks that even though I was supporting operations over in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia... since my boots weren't on the ground, I don't qualify for the Iraq or Afghanistan campaign medals.

I know plenty of people who would trade 3 inches of ribbon for not getting blown up and shot.

Count me with the folks who think the "campaign medals" should go to the people actually fighting in the campaign. Not getting medals that you don't rate (due to the qualifications for the award) does not "suck". Getting shot at "sucks".

The "supported the war in the rear, with the gear" medal is described here:

Did these fellas who went Marine ground spend two years in flight school?

My point is that I have seen several LTJG's or ENS's sporting 4/5 ribbons and have yet to even get into the fleet. Kind of a lot of chest candy for never being operational IMO.

I haven't seen anything more than the pistol/rifle qual ribbons, with maybe an odd ribbon or two as a very rare exception, for the non-priors.

I am RAG complete and have a pizza stain and wings. How many of your E-dog AF ribbons are you allowed to still wear? ;)

The Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal requires deployment.
The GWOTSM just requires service in support of designated operations.

Dude, I think you're confusing the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal with the Global War on Terror Service Medal. The latter is the latest, greatest NDM. I got my GWOTEM for the opening days of OIF, flying off a boat that was in the Med, across Turkey and into Northern Iraq. Is that in the rear with the gear?

To be awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a military service member must perform duty in a deployed status and must participate in designated anti-terrorism operation for a period of either 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days of duty.

^Generous offer. I'd pay money to go to SAMI school :D
Easily the coolest school the Navy has sent me to:slaphappy (so far). Always wanted to go to VBSS school (they were in the same schoolhouse) but crappy thing about being on the carrier... wasn't gonna happen:(

If ya wanted to, you could trade it in for the Iraq Campaign medal, since that wasn't released until what, 2 years after the war kicked off? NDAWS has the listings of eligible units, but it looks like it can take forever for that system to update sometimes....:icon_rage

I'm at SRF-A now; hoping to head back for NCB VBSS in January. Fun shit for sure.

For JO Navy types, here is about 95%+ of what you need to know about awards for career purposes. A below-normal or missing end of tour award will raise questions and be looked upon poorly. Nobody cares about participation-type air medals, but individual action (i.e. has a "V") will be remarked upon favorably at a board and could make a good tie breaker (as well as NCMs or NAMs with a V, to a lesser extent).

Nobody will ever look to see if you have rifle/pistol quals, they won't count the number of sea service or overseas service ribbons you have (the board is looking at your tour history and knows if you have avoided sea duty or taken a hard-fill overseas), and they don't care about battle E's or MUCS, etc.

In short, the only person worried about how many rows you have is you.

.....
'NEW' WINGS ... in this day of medal inflation and everyone having to feel "O.K." about themselves ... and for anything other than what they were originally intended for .... are complete bullshit.

When you get right down to it ... they are pathetic penis envy: suggestion --- get a life, wish-I-was wannabe's ...

Yeah, the S-1 mentioned that to me 2 years later. When I was in Iraq. So, I'll stick with both...

Because you are rated as a Naval Aviator or Naval Flight Officer at the completion of flight school. Isn't it true that your designator isn't whatever a pin-wearing shoe's is until you get the blessing from your skipper that you've successfully earned your pin?

Flight school is essentially a huge PQS that results in a qualification. There would be too many different instructions on how one would earn their wings should you push it to the RAG/Fleet squadron level. When would you give a F/A-18 pilot his wings vs an F/A-18F pilot? What about a P-3 NFO vs an ECMO? Each community within aviation would have to essentially have its own set of regs on how to earn wings.

And what do you mean after you qualify? Qualify as mission commander? Aircraft commander? 1P? Section lead? Division Lead?
This is circular reasoning. You're saying you qualify for the warfare device because you're rated a Naval Aviator or NFO at the end of flight school. How is making it through flight school any different than making it through power school and prototype in terms of warfare qualification? What I'm getting at is why are you warfare qualified (emphasis being on warfare) simply because you made it through flight school? I'm looking for a logical/philosophical reason here, not "because that's what the brass says" or "that's how we've always done it".

Regarding what I mean by "after you qualify," I'm referring to any initial qualification in which you show that you have basic to intermediate knowledge in how to tactically employ your platform. Given how the quals differ in the fleet depending on platform, it may make sense (like I said before), to wing aviators at the completion of the RAG. If it's truly a warfare pin, then shouldn't you have that basic to intermediate knowledge?
