No more rifle drill?

I heard classes at OCS were issued swords to replace rifles, and that there will no longer be rifle drills. Anyone care to confirm?

Hey I heard from the guys that just got back from 189 that you wont do to much in the way of drill to begin with. Something about the Gunnys realizing that your not gonna be marching a platoon anywhere in the Sandbox?

BS, you get rifles for the first 7 weeks for drill comp then you get swords for the last few to practice for graduation. Unless thats changed in the last 3 weeks...

Well, if that's the case I'm intrigued by it. Wouldn't surprise me though based on the shakeup thats been going on at OCS lately. Will have to ask about it when I talk to the folks I know still in the process.

Is today meaning today, the day you posted or is "today" another time. Also if it just changed today how did you find out about it so fast?

I've heard rumors of odd stuff going on down there. What kind of shakeups are you talking about? I'd hate to think the warm friendly OCS I left has truned into a cold, hard place.

Seems to me that rifle drill, regardless of OCS (Navy or Marine Corps) still serves a purpose. It gives you an oppotunity to overcome any nervousness you may have about addressing/giving commands to a small unit. If they did get rid of it, it's a travesty.

Wrong forum. This is NAVY OCS. 189 would be USMC OCS. Very different beasts.

Ahh, see thats what I get for using the Active Posts since last visit feature.

I'd be interested to learn how much close order drill Candidates do at Navy OCS. We did precious little at Brown Field (compared to enlisted Marines), but I'd think it was more than the Navy. Anyone?

Absolutely. I've drilled a squad and a company (ROTC unit was smaller... equivalent of fire-team and platoon size) and it was a huge confidence builder.

Of course, I haven't TOUCHED drill since getting commissioned. Crap, I've stood in 3 formations since getting commissioned. I wonder if I remember how. :D

I heard they're still doing drill, but instead of an umteen pound rifle, you get a sword. Sorry if that wasn't clear. And if they're issuing swords instead of rifles, you don't have to attempt to assemble your rifle in 3 seconds while being yelled at during inspection. There's not a whole lot of removable parts on a sword.

I would have thought that was the whole point. No?

Back in the day we did the entire manual of arms, rifle and sword. Do you still box and wrestle? What about the rifle run, that was huge?

Wait a minute, I'm confused, are we talking USMC OCS again? What is happening in Pcola?
