Do all initial physicals take place at MEPS? The reason I ask is because I live a few miles from Pensacola NAS. The nearest MEPS is in Montgomery. So I was wondering if I could just get my physical at
the Navy hospital here in P'cola instead.

thanks

No, I live outside of Washington DC and did my physical at the National Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD. MEPS for me is near Baltimore, so the distance wasn't a big difference.

I did my physical at NAS Corpus Christi because the guys at MEPS were hassling me about my PRK surgery. I was in and out in a few hours and the corpsmen were pretty polite to me. I’ve heard MEPS stories about how the people there can be difficult and even rude. Can’t blame them though. They’ve got some miserable bastard stuck in a small room 365 days/year telling people to bend over. I would hate my job too.

If you’re lucky enough to get your physical at the NAS, you’ll probably have less hassle over minor paperwork issues. Good luck!

Im getting mine at Bethesda Naval, anyone other than Stegall have any experiences there. I hate to say this, but you guys should know: I am deathly petrified of doctors. My recruiter told me to just shut up and do what they said and not offer any extra info :)

Adam, Bethesda isn't bad. Everyone's super nice. The worst is dental. The wait is ridiculous. The dude that drew my blood was awesome, didn't feel a thing. I'm not a big fan of needles either, unless they're tattooing me. :)

I'd accompany you, if I could. Wait til December to go! HAHAHA Then I'll go with you.

That's a good question, I have a fake tooth and had a root canal done and a post put in for my fake tooth. Is that a problem?

man i would hate to think that a fake tooth or anything like that could hold someone back, i have a tooth that is part fake but the root is from my original tooth,, i will find out thursday

Well I am not worried about dental. I used to have some gum problems, but those are long gone and I have never had a cavity or anything like that.

I am pretty sure(99%) that my vision is A-OK, I guess I am just nervous about the blood test and heart EKG...something about my heart..I guess my dad had a heart attack in his mid twenties that they were never able to explain and that freaked me a bit.

Just a note on the dental exam. I haven't had the physical yet so I can't give you any first hand info, but there is a reference to the dental check on the NOMI site. Doesn't go into any detail, just says "Any dental defect that would react adversely to changes in the barometric pressure is CD."

I have a good friend who joined the navy after dental school. He's stationed in Japan, but I'll see if I can get in touch with him and see if he can find anything out about what exactly would be CD.

yeah, AdamS, I too am somewhat nervous about the physical. I'm not really worried about my vision cause NFO is my first choice. I'm just a little concerned about the blood work and urine tests(wow, they actually watch you pee) Anyway, I have to go to MEPS up in Montgomery cause my officer recruiter is up there. The Navy doesn't have officer recruiters down here on the Gulf Coast, which is weird cause this part of the world is loaded with military installations.

I've got more fake teeth than I can count. I never said a word about it, and neither did the dentist, or doc, when I got my physical. Sure hope it never comes up.

Hey Sheperd,
Did the dentist mention anything about wisdom teeth? have you had your's out? Mine are still in and my dentist says i'll never need them out but from what i heard is the Navy makes you get them out, but they don't kick you out or anything. Anyone have any info on this?

SmithS,

I have mine in as well, but I'm getting them removed on the 26th to avoid disrupting my schedule at OCS. I've heard that if you have your wisdom teeth in when you get to OCS you will be sent to the dentist who decides if they should be removed or not. If you do get them removed while at OCS, there is change your training can be delayed because of the recovery period. I'm going off what my dad says who went through this 28 years ago. Things may have changed since then. But wait, we're talking about the Navy here, so the protocol probably has not changed too much.
