Pilot broke rules when he buzzed Downtown

Too bad for the pilot. When I was in Meridian, I led a flight of four A-4's over the town of Yazoo City, Mississippi when we heard they were having a Memorial Day event. The four of us were all leaving on cross countries, but joined up to spice up their celebration with an impromptu air show. Three passes, the last a missing man fly-by. The first two passes were at, oh, somewhere above 199' and below 201' at 350 knots, and the missing man at 500' and 225 knots. The mayor of Yazoo City loved it so much they called our commodore and asked if they could make the four pilots honorary citizens of their fine community. Not only did we get certificates from Yazoo City, our commodore gave us a letter of commendation for enhancing the image of the Navy with local citizens!

Yeah...we can't fly on holidays anymore because we have civilian maintainers. I guess Corpus Christi will just have to standby for that T-34 flyover.;) :D

"Oh the times...they are a changin."

Sounds like a recipe for disaster. ;)

Not really, the four of us had previously flown two memorial services together, and we just flew standard four plane form as we did every day in the MOAs. Actually, impromptu air show was a bad description. More like four plane form at low altitude, something we had all done around the ship and on weps dets quite often.

That's just one of those terms, like "Watch this." :D

Brett, are you sure you're not an Air Force wannabe? Since when does a properly briefed (albeit in the air) flight conducted by four qualified aviators that was conducted safely in its execution deserve a hit? Grow some nuts and be aggressive once in a while; that's what naval aviation is famous for.

 Jesus Christ, it's supposed to be funny, not an indictment.

But when "Tom" made a comment like that in the international flying forum, he got his ass chewed and was told to shut up because he doesn't know what he's talking about by a lot of the the "senior" people on AW. Sure, the words "Watch this" do precede a lot of dangerous situations but it's sad that a few pricks kill the spirit of Naval Aviation. I see nothing wrong with a group of four trained aviators that have flown together doing a Memorial Day fly-by on their way out for a cross country. Also, what's wrong with high-speed passes (besides that it's against NATOPS)? That should give the citizens of this country goosebumps to see that and to know that it's those people that are defending the freedoms of this country.

Okay...I'll stop ranting now.

Nobody is saying the "impromptu airshow" was wrong, just that it sounded funny. As for the rest of your commentary, get some wings, then we'll talk about the spirit of Naval Aviation in the context of what is and what is not a good idea while operating aircraft. You should rant less and not pass judgment on people who actually know something about the fraternity you're rushing.

Not that the public would EVER be frightened by a P-3 flyover, but the lengths to which we must go to even be scheduled to do one is outright ridiculous. Powerpoint brief up through your squadron, then the Wing, then the Group, then to CNAF. That's just to get it SCHEDULED.
