Well, I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet but I have a question for some senior members especially those who are NFOs. I am in week 5 of API. End of week 4, they did our average and my weighted average came out to be 92.2...which is a 41.8 NSS. I needed to have a 42.5 to stay in the pilot pipeline. Yes I'm quite frustrated but I guess there isn't much I can do right now. I was told that I can put in a package for NFO and I will get picked up most definitely. However, I'm not too sure that's something I want to do. Here's my question: Even if I do agree and get picked up by the NFO school here, what are my chances of switching to Pilot later on????No, I'm not trying to be whinny but if I knew about this 2 years ago, I would've stayed in AFROTC and not put in for Navy. I probably wouldn't have gone through OCS if I knew that Navy was going to do a little switcharoo just because I don't have a 93 average. What sucks more is that I know some FY05 guys who have way lower average then mine and they are being sent to Corpus and Whiting.
So anyway, what are the chances of switching from NFO to Pilot and do I have to wait until after I get winged and do my first sea tour????Another question, if I choose not to go NFO and get out of the Navy, Is there any way I can submit a pilot package with the Marines or the Air Force. After all, I didn't fail out of API.

Oh yeah, for those FY04 guys who haven't classed up yet...here were my grades so you guys should try to do way better then me I guess. 96 (aero), 92 (Weather), 86 (Aero II), 96 (Engines), 88 (Nav), 100 (FRR).

As discussed ad-nauseum on this site, yes it's possible, but highly unlikely, so don't plan your career based on a long shot. IMHO, being an NFO in the Navy beats the hell out of ANY USAF gig (even pilot).

My advice - if the Navy won't let you be a pilot, then switch to NFO and then study harder.

Well dude... like Brett alluded to... you're a naval officer first and a stickmonkey/NFO second.

If you "wouldn't have joined the Navy" if you couldn't get the job you wanted, you joined for the wrong reasons. I tell the same thing to everyone I know still in ROTC who says "I'll DOR if I don't get jets!!!"

You may want to take a long look at your reasons for joining the Navy and the military in general if that's how you feel. A lot of folks who are NFOs wanted to be pilots and didn't get their shot... me included. Oh well. It's the nature of the job. Our CO used to say that in his whole career, he never got what he wanted once, but if he could do it again, he wouldn't change a thing.

Some share this sentiment, some don't..... but I'd rather be a NFO than a SWO, or worse, working in the industry, any day. NFO was my second choice. If I lost my pilot slot for whatever reason, like my eyes magically fall out of my head..... I'd go NFO in a heartbeat. You're still in the air, and you're doing real world, tip of the spear work.

Venom, you're also in a position to ask all of the instructors and staff at Schools Command for face to face input. They're there to help.

YEAH BABY!!! Nothing gets the FOs riled up like "I don't want to be in the navy as anything but a front seater." Love seeing you guys get pissed off about that bullsh!t.

Venom-use your head dude. Are you really going to come on to a site for Naval Aviation, start talking about being an NFO as if it's the lamest gig out there, then expect seroius advice on your situation?

I'm not one of these hot-headed, dangerous NFOs, so I'll still give you some advice since I feel sorry for you bubbas taking the hit in API right now. Instead of setting your sights on a job transfer (or worse, say you'd rather be in the AF!?), why don't you ask the NFOs on this site about their jobs? You might find some pretty sweet costants: service/flying/comraderie/boozing.

You still have a commission. Next time, either better disguise your whining or just quit it altogether.

I think you need to do what you really want. No offense to NFO's but I just couldn't do it. For me, it was fly or do something else in the navy. Actually, I wanted intel or supply if I didn't get pilot. I was lucky enough to get 1390 all those years ago, earn my wings and continue but I knew deep down NFO wasn't for me. Of course it might just be that I'm not bright enough to be a back seater :)

I don't get why people are like "I won't be a back seater, F*&% that S*&t!". You make it sound like NFOs are second class citizens. Who is the one who tells the pilot what to do???? The NFO! It's freakin awesome. And it's not like you won't ever lay your hands on the controls ever. I once too envisioned myself as a pilot, but I have height issues and went NFO instead... I was upset for like a day... nothing in the navy is ever guaranteed, but the one thing you can do it go out there and be the best damn NFO you can be. Everything happens for a reason, and there is a silver lining somewhere out there for you, you just gotta let yourself find it.

Do us all a favor and get out. I'm seriously over all these pilot-or-nothing prima donnas. You should have studied harder. Suck it up. The best thing about this is that you won't be a pilot who thinks his NFO is 2nd class. By the way, I'm a FO and my NSS was higher than a 41.5. So it's not like we're the dumb kid who has to sit in the back. I can't believe that people still write crap like this. :icon_rage
