Random Griz Aviation Musings

We kept a hand built RNAV approach built on our brick as the ‘E’ in PACE when out of the country. 60F/H software had the ability to build the approach but required us to double check the build.

BL - was there for sudden sandstorms after the PAR and TACAN were down from mortar hits.

Before whatever nav upgrades you ended up getting, did you have issues holding GPS in turns in the F/H? It was a known issue in the B when you would wrap it up. It would come right back, but it was something to be aware of when doing ASW so your plot didn't shift over to East Jesus.

There were a number of AF near misses from manual entry of instrument approach fixes, that their Vol 3 (AF equiv of 3710) was changed mandate all instrument approaches had to be retrieved from a database, prohibiting manual entry.

Yeah, if I’m going to spend $2 million + for a helicopter I’d rather get a used one with a lot more carrying space. I love the Enstrom, but their turbine slips into an odd space where it’s big enough to be a great trainer but too small to be a great personal machine. Next $2 million I have to spare…I’ll get one of these… https://alltheplanes.com/listing/1997-bell-407-d0d713e3
It sold we can’t buy it now.😢

YES!

Not sure if it was a FRPA vs. CRPA thing or just old tech.

No issues with the GPS walking off.

Only bit that made the F/H system not certified by the FAA was the ability to move a waypoint.

We made a risk decision doing this. Like I said, we were on the fourth option. Thankfully, never had to use it, but in my mind, I think it is better to have had it than not.

With the 24th Helicopter Squadron today at Maxwell AFB. The 24th is the Formal Training Unit /Schoolhouse for the MH-139 Helo.

Some interesting observations.

No APU and a crappy battery start capacity. SOP is to utilize a ground power cart for all starts.

4 Axis autopilot, and impressive FMS and RNAV capability.

No AC or cooling ECS.

No ADS-B In. Stratus pucks on glare shield provide data to iPad EFB.

NO WX radar. Unbelievable given the weather in the northern plains and prairie in the summer

Vulnerable to weather and corrosion so much so that SOP requires a hangar for any overnight parking or storage

Still an impressive and fine looking helicopter.

Sounds like the old Griz-O-Copter except I had ADSB-In, you could leave it outside all you wanted, and the battery was pretty powerful.
