Saluting

I do however give a quick salute to the gate guard while in my car at the gate after he's saluted me.

Quick question, honest broker here, long discussed.

If you approach the gate, Uncovered, does that guard render the hand salute? Do you return the salute if you are uncovered?

I know what is usually done, and also understand "if in doubt, salute".

I also understand that the hand salute is a privledge, for example you can lose that privledge of saluting.

I know what the answer to the Gate Guard question was at one time, just wondered if it has changed over the years. Also know the Army/Air Force might answer the question differently.

Also don't wear a cover while driving. Never had any grief about it.

I always wear my cover going through the gate. I feel like a tool when the guard salutes me and I'm uncovered. (I return the salute if covered... I can drive with one hand)

I believe it is a matter of discipline. As Officers, you get to choose.

I believe it is a very short distance between lax discipline (small stuff as some may say) and "Awwww Chief, do not sweat the small stuff. I checked two of the six hydraulic pumps on that bird and they were both good. I know I checked off on all six as having been inspected because I think that they are fine, and I have never had a problem." :icon_rage

As Officers, your choice on discipline.

A salute is still rendered, even if the recipient cannot return the salute. For example, if you see CO in civilian attire, you would still salute even though he can't return it.

The gate guard is saluting the blue sticker.

I can't answer for SWO world (stricter in general), but the O-3 and O-4 instructors don't tend to salute each other, unless it's like the OPSO. All O-1 and O-2 students salute instructors. I have no idea what it's like in a real squadron.

No way... JOs don't salute each other outside the training command.

I was stashed in squadron for about 6 months. LT's and below tend not to salute each other. They all consider themselves JO's. I saluted this one LT I had met at the NEX one day and he gave me weird look and kinda laughed. I have no problem saluting, don't really understand the problem with it, guess that's why I get weird looks saluting the O2's walking around.

I was warned by the guys in the squadroun though, to make sure you salute your instructors in flight school unless they tell you otherwise.

So if u are in uniform, but uncovered, do you return the salute??

The Navy and Marine Corps do not salute uncovered. The Army and Air Force do (or so I've been told). I don't think I've ever gotten a clear answer on saluting other services, but I believe the rule is basically, when in Rome...

sometimes when i (a navy spouse) drive through the gate the guard salutes; although i appreciate the gesture, it makes me feel a little uncomfortable, as i'm "not worthy" of a salute. i just usually smile and say thanks for lack of a better response.

Often drive son's car. Seldom get a salute at the gate.

And never salute my son, as I am always in civilian clothing! But I would if I could!

My wife says that when she goes to the commissary at NAS Jax, the gate guard looks at her dependent ID card then stands back and salutes. She says it happens every time. I understand saluting the blue sticker, but if you know for a fact that the person in the car is not an officer, I don't understand why they would still salute. She gets a kick out of it, but she knows not to say anything if they don't salute (I've heard of some officer's wives getting pissy when the gate guard doesn't salute).

If the person in the vehicle is someone I know to be an officer, or if they are in uniform, I salute. But I stopped saluting the blue sticker in A-school after I found out that one of the cars I had been saluting was part of some little local shuttle service. The guy bought the car from an officer and never bothered scraping the sticker off.
