More news out of Red Sea ..

• Attack Repelled: Two U.S. Navy destroyers, the USS Stockdale and USS O’Kane, successfully repelled an attack by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in the Gulf of Aden, ensuring no injuries or damage.

• Weapons Engaged: The destroyers defeated multiple threats, including anti-ship ballistic missiles, uncrewed aerial systems, and an anti-ship cruise missile.

• CENTCOM’s Commitment: The actions highlight CENTCOM’s ongoing efforts to protect U.S. personnel, regional partners, and international shipping from Houthi attacks.

• Retaliatory Strikes: The attack followed U.S. retaliatory strikes on Houthi weapons storage facilities in Yemen, marking the first combat use of the F-35C stealth strike fighter.

Yikes...so gaming this out...what happens when one sneaks through? Just need to be lucky once.

I've always wondered what the next play would have been if an Iranian missile fired in retaliation for Soleimani's smiting had hit paydirt.

Very few of the inbound weapons are targeting USN ships.

That’s a worthwhile question. My guess is that, much like the USS Stark (Iraq did it but we decided to blame Iran even though we know Iraq did it), we’ll select a predetermined “bad guy” and smack them around a bit but the status quo won’t change much at all. I doubt we’d hit Iran at all so I imagine more strikes on Houthi targets.

I've always wondered if some of these engagements are designed to make sure that none of the wrong targets get hit. They can sell the retaliation at home without actually getting in to more of a fight than they want.

My default is that no matter what they may say in public, that most of these governments are rational actors.

I hope I'm right.

While the Houthis are only loosely affiliated with Iran as far as ideology goes, it's a proxy war.

It's not like we don't know where these weapons are coming from, who is advising the Houthis and training them on how to use them.

But the American people, and the rest of the Western world as well as our middle eastern allies and adversaries, will stomach a war in Yemen a hell of a lot better than in Iran.

And let's not forget that we've never really left Yemen, or Somalia for that matter. I wonder what the future holds now that the world is starting to peek into that dark corner of the house that no one wants to visit but desperately needs some attention and fixing up.

What is the "R" device ???
“Remote.” It might be an interesting mental exercise to determine if a ship that fires a missile to destroy a rocket aimed at a different (non-military) vessel is a “remote” act or “combat” act.

For "Remote Effects". I don't think we can get an "R" on a CAR (I hope not... But we do seem to be getting shot down a lot lately) but we can get them on air medals and I think up to a DFC. It makes sense.

The guys who do the really tough strikes, the Presidential level stuff, or who do excellent work in a TIC scenario tend to get awarded that way. Or if you find someone we've been hunting for years who has gone dark for a long time.
