For "Remote Effects". I don't think we can get an "R" on a CAR (I hope not... But we do seem to be getting shot down a lot lately) but we can get them on air medals and I think up to a DFC. It makes sense.

The guys who do the really tough strikes, the Presidential level stuff, or who do excellent work in a TIC scenario tend to get awarded that way. Or if you find someone we've been hunting for years who has gone dark for a long time.
Thanks - new info for me. It certainly appears the men and women deploying to the IO/Red Sea are experiencing a level of "threat" I never did during multiple deployments throughout that region. Unless, of course, you consider the port stop, and food in Hurghada, Egypt. That place should warrant mandatory Bronze Stars (with the FP device - for Food Poisoning) and a mandatory 15% bump-up in your VA disability rating when you retire . . .

+1. Veteran of Hurghada April 1991. Stayed at Sonesta 4 man bungalow. We paid house staff in Marlboro cigarettes from ships store. Laundry, clothing repairs, shoe resoling, everything you could imagine. Red meat dishes to be avoided were often horse meat or donkey.

Shore based at the Egyptian air base and flew local training ops. Our rescue swimmers had a field day diving on submerged aircraft wreckage sites.

A lot of drinking after being in KSA!

Nothing more impressive than a DFC for direct action airmanship.

This link was sent to me from an active duty colleague (tanker dude)

The Navy and Naval Aviation needs to do more 'bragging' and self promotion.

@Brett327 the current Navy view of being humble and quiet about bravery and superior performance in combat doesn't serve us - would you agree?

Can you point to a policy document that outlines this view, because I think you’ve invented this in your mind. MOB got a DFC for shooting down a big scary Su-22. Is it your view that every occasion where a weapon is employed against a hostile platform warrants a DFC, because that a pretty low bar for “bravery and superior performance in combat.” Should a Growler crew get a DFC for suppressing a SAM that could have engaged a friendly aircraft, or is that just a Growler crew doing their fucking job.

I have to say that a DFC for a refueling mission is pretty prosaic…unless I’m missing something.

...You mean kinda like giving everyone a CAR when they actually didn't serve in a combat environment?

I hope the next dead TACAN killed by a growler gets their crew DFC's :)

By definition ships getting shot at is a combat environment. Guaranteed you wouldn’t be talking shit if you actually saw what ships have been doing out there.

If you want to argue about combat awards, much better justification arguing against these Silver Stars, Bronze Stars and DFCs for aircrew who literally faced no hostile fire.

You missed @Hotdogs railing against CARs for entire ships a few months (years?) back. This is an internal AW's callback.

Lots of shooting going on, just because it doesn't make the news doesn't mean it ain't happening. Ironic or not, it is partly because the Navy has done a good job so far that it isn't making the news as much as one might assume.

The current situation near Yemen is exactly the kind of situation that the CAR was instituted for.

I forget whether it has been mentioned here or not, but I believe members of Tailhook can now access through the member's site the recording of the panel on IKE's Red Sea Cruise, which went into good depth and was fantastically interesting. Also appreciate the panel was comprised of JO's from across the Air Wing which was pretty cool.

Ooohhh, you're so edgy and provocative.

Not exactly, but definitely willing to call out hypocrisy when I see it, Brett.

By definition that doesn't meet the criteria for a CAR, but we've already bludgeoned that dead horse. Probably shouldn't surprise you that these briefs have made their around the fleet and many, including myself, have gotten the brief(s). If beating up on some shit-pot third world insurgents with hand-me-down over the horizon weapons makes you feel better, then you might want a reality check. Let's not act like this was the Falklands.

This is the type of self-flagellating masturbation that occurs when the fleet hasn't seen an actual war in decades. Sure some awards were deserved, and probably for some very specific ships, actions, and aircraft. But hey, if the everyone gets a trophy and juice pops after the ball game makes you feel better about yourself, then go for it. You guys really get your panties twisted over this stuff.
