Shot around a half dozen pistols over the past two weeks... Baretta m9, Glock 19, Glock 22, Walther PPK, Springfield XD-45. Might have been another in there, but I don't remember it.
The Glock 19 (9mm compact) felt really good, but the glock 22 (full size .40) hurt to fire. Of the guns I've fired so far, if I were to buy a weapon for concealed carry, it'd be the Glock 19. But, I have many more to try first.
Favorite full-size pistol by far was the XD-45, which felt extremely smooth and was very comfortable in to hold. Also made me realize that it was the Glock 22, and not me, that was causing my thumb to get bruised.
It's too bad they don't have Colt 1911s to rent at the range here

As has been said above: rent and shoot as many pistols as you can, and make your decision based on what feels best to you. As one of the guys at the range told me, it's like buying a car -- everyone has their own taste.

You are right. I forget there's like 412 varieties of Glock. I've really only seen a couple that friends have. The ones I've seen are the same size or bigger than the 19. 17 is like a bigger 9mm variant.

Nice scoober, I have the twin to your 26, mag extension and all. That little extension makes a world of difference. If I'm going t-shirt, I carry the 26 in a IWB holster. If I'm wearing a sweatshirt or jacket, it's the Glock 21SF in a pancake holster. Talk about a hand cannon---those 14 rounds of 230gr +P JHP's are HEAVY!
What I noticed about smaller calibers (in the Glocks, anyway) is that they tend to be more "snappy" while the larger calibers (.45ACP namely) are more of a big push. I can't really explain it.

I have a G23 which is a .40 in a compact frame. It does sort of "push" back on you more than it does "up". And also if you really like a gun but its hurting your thumb just get a Hogue grip on there for a few bucks. Even the litle cheap slip on ones are effective.
I'd suggest you start looking for gun shows, you can usually find some pretty good deals there.
Additionally, you'll get to browse through ALL types of firearms and try them on for size. In my opinion, the firearm you buy in the end should satisfy your budget, caliber satisfaction, and finally how it feels in your hand, and you'll be happy.

I'm a big fan of Sig. My P220 is my favorite of all my guns.
Now, just looking to get into shooting, looking for larger caliber? Don't want to break the bank?
