Shooting at AZ Congresswoman Event

More likely the opposite will happen. Automatic weapons, CCW responder (all reportedly). Everyone will read into this want they want to see.

No automatic weapons, it was a semi-auto glock... which is what most pistols are anyway.

Was the guy who took him down a CCW permit holder?

CCW is required. Open carry is permitted without a permit.

EDIT: My information is outdated slightly. In April AZ became a non permit carry state.

people are already using this to bring up political arguments

Obviously it can appear too convenient and in bad taste for liberals, myself included, to use the acts of a madman as support for a certain policy belief. I do agree with you that quickly jumping into this old debate so quickly is disrespectful. However, I don't believe using today's events as part of a larger argument for increased gun regulation takes away the validity in one's argument.

Sure but there is a time and place to do that... and down the road it will be appropriate to use this incident to argue for and against gun control etc.

But directly in the aftermath while people grieve for their loved ones, and pray that others survive their wounds, such arguments are best left out of the discussion.

Whatever your your place on the political spectrum or individual hot button issues, this kind of thing should be appalling to everyone. In this country, if you don't like what elected officials are doing, you have a reasonable method inducing change: Voting them out of office. Indeed, some would call that civic responsibility towards upholding the social contract, but what do I know.

Nothing good--from anyone's perspective--can come from shit. The resulting political chaos, fear mongering, etc has the potential to seriously disrupt this country's political and economic situations both at home and abroad, and ultimately weakens us across the board.

I will point out that there is a small positive side to this story- the two people who tackled the shooter. They, my friends, would seem to be two people who made a choice--with significant personal risk--to not be bystanders and to get involved.

.... using today's events as part of a larger argument .....

Perhaps my lack of political sophistication.

But the killings and mayhem make me so sad, litterly ill, that I do not understand how anyone could find any joy therein. I think that those who do present a danger to our society, direct or thru surrogates, known and unknown.

I am happy this all happened...

Disturbing.

I find the comment that you're 'glad all this happened' is a bit...well, disconcerting would be a mild way to describe it.

The clarifications easy - Clux is an idiot.

Beyond disturbing. IMO this is a statement that qualifies as a warning sign, further appropriate investigation needed.

Or you could read the context of his post and figure out that it wasn't a typo. Motherfucker said he was happy people, including a federal judge and a 9 year old are dead because maybe it would get us to play nicer when we're talking politics.

Or to put it even MORE into perspective - FIDEL CASTRO has more class than Clux4 does. I think 3 months isn't long enough personally.

That is pretty sad. Normally, I would like to give someone the benefit of the doubt, but his statement left little room for misinterpretation.

Every time something unfortunate like this happens and the media starts trying to talk intelligently about guns this comes to mind-

As an AZ resident and on the road (in southern AZ) for several hours listening to developments as they happened, I think the initial local coverage was as fair and accurate as you can get when things are so dynamic. As stated, comments about politics are out of line. Unfortunately, the Pima County Sheriff went way out of his expertise when he implied political discourse triggered the event and stated AZ was the capital of hate. I gave the Sheriff a break at first as he knew Gifford's and Judge Rolls personally. But he went way too far and way to long. His statements now give cover to the media to make this debate about the political discourse and by that they mean the hateful right. The Sheriff is a liberal Democrat widely criticized for his refusal to enforce the new immigration laws in AZ. His grief over the shootings of personal friends motivated him to take political swipes outside his law enforcement responsibilities. Comments about the contentious election she just came through does not mention that it was her Democratic primary opponent that was more vitriolic then her GOP general election opponent. The debate we will have to listen to about political debate being too contentious is built on a non existent foundation. There is NO evidence the shooter was motivated by traditional party politics or mainstream policy debates. John Hinkley wasn't motivated by Democratic criticism of Reagan. Squeaky Fromme wasn't inspired by Democratic criticism of Ford. And in neither case was the argument made by the GOP. The guy is a nut case. Anyone that brings politics into the discussion is simply trying to silence political speech in an environment where they are not winning the debate. And even though I didn't support Rep Gifford's for election, I know that is something she would not support dispite being in the party losing much of the debate. She was respected by everyone in AZ politics, most notably the ones that have been toe to toe with her. Disagreement, debate, even screaming and anger is a far cry from the hate or mental imbalance that led to this shooting.

From the Pima Co. Sheriff: No security at all. No armed citizen intervention. Glock was used, he didn't specify model. 31 round extended mag. When shooter attempted to reload, with a second 31 round mag a wounded women grabbed the magazine and attempted to grab the gun. The shooter was able to make the magazine reload but the Sheriff reported the gun "misfired". Don't know what that means or how they know. Unarmed bystanders tackled the shooter about that time.
