Shooting at AZ Congresswoman Event

Recovering LSO

The Congresswoman is apparently a gun owner and falls on the side of legal and registered ownership.

Another interesting link, more a timeline, from NPR. Of note: It took less than 12 hours for the sheriff to begin his public editorializing... And it appears that the media outlets who, rushed by the need to "win", incorrectly reported the Congresswoman's death won't be held accountable for the amateur journalism. I can't think of too many "professions" where you can be so wrong about something so critical on such a large stage, and then blow it off when you find out that your haste to say something caused you to say the absolute wrong thing.

Remember when Pres Reagan was shot, Dan Rather and Lesley Stahl, live, lambasting the "White House" for not admitting that the President was dead? Said Rather (sic) "...after all we saw the point blank shooting, all five shots, and we know the President is dead. Now for 1 minute of silence in memory of the President". I just cannot understand the unbridled hatred shown by some after events such as these. So tragic.

Don't listen to the vitriolic rhetoric of Rush.....he'll make you:
1. Set up an occultish altar.
2. Consider using marijuana as currency.
3. Think that Mein Kampf and Kommunist Manifesto are your favorite reads.
Sincerely,
Sherriff Dipshit, Pima Co. AZ

One of the guy's listed favorite books is "The Communist Manifesto," so if he did have any political leanings, I doubt they were to the Right. Apparently he was obsessed with this woman because of how she refused to answer a question he had asked her back in 2007 (something like "What is government if words mean nothing?").

As for the whole debate on political rhetoric, I think it is rather pointless. Anybody who thinks the political rhetoric of now is bad should go look at some of the stuff said back in America's early days. The more proper debate some have said that we should be having is about how should the laws be formed with regards to if a person is a real nut and how to commit them into an institution. That's a really gray area, because taken too far, you can end up with normal people forced into an institution for being "insane" for the wrong reasons. The laws make it very difficult to do this to someone, so they couldn't put this guy into an institution at all until he actually did something.

Instead however, everyone is debating the political rhetoric when it had nothing to do with what this guy did.

Bingo.

It's a waste of time, IMO, to argue whether or not this guy was left/right or whether rhetoric was to blame. There is no logical explanation for the acts of a madman.

If I'm not mistaken, in Louisiana there is/was a public health official (can't recall the official title) who could detain anyone for a psych eval for like 48 hours and didn't even need to be a MD to hold the position. Definitely greasy...

This is true in a lot of places. Nurses and docs for sure can issue a psych hold (3 days in Mass) if you're determined to be a threat to yourself or someone else.

Yup I can do a section on the mentally ill. But only if they want to kill themselves or harm others. It is an pain in the behind to do these. Plan on spending five to six hours with the person. Citizens can do it for loved ones as well. Just got to speak to a JP.

Another example of timing/luck being everything, Gabrielle Giffords' surgeon has a bit more experience in this kind of trauma than most...

His awards include: Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1999); the Meritorious Service Medal (2007); the Navy Commendation Medal (2001); the Joint Services Achievement Medal (2000); the Navy Unit Commendation (2003); the Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2005); and the Iraqi Campaign Medal (2006).

That's right, this man spent 24 years in the US Navy as a surgeon - deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq to forward surgical sites. One of his final tours before he retired was using his experience to teach Navy Doctors/Surgeons & Corpsman as the director of the Navy's Trauma Training Center in Los Angeles.

I'll bet that gave her husband a lot of comfort, knowing the surgeon was sierra hotel and had experience with this type of trauma (though a trauma surgeon at a hospital in a large city probably has experience, as well).

Sorta TIC, but maybe we should hope the pilot flying the medevac jet tomorrow that takes Giffords to Houston is an AF jock who specializes in "greaser" landings - most any Naval Aviator would be likely to give her a 3G bend-the-mainmounts landing that might set her recovery back months!
