Socal to RI

ok,
I am on a fence. I know the benefits of taking a car to RI, however, I will be reporting in Jan. and right now with the midwest getting pounded by ice storms and overall, it being winter, I am uncertain if driving would be wise. I don't know how many days I should give myself (google says about 1.5 days so about 3 days of driving if doing average of 70 for 12 hours per day). Anyone ever make the drive like that during winter? I would not want to take the southern route due to extra mileage and time involved. If it were summer I would drive it (I-80). I have lived in a snow area but I just don't trust the weather. Thanks for the help.

If you do drive, giver yourself about 5 days.. that way you're not rushing and such.

With the weather being like it is, I'd fly.

The bus system in RI isn't bad... you can get a bus to almost anywhere. There's a bus stop right outside the gate by the next that'll take you down town. From there, you can get to almost anywhere else in RI. From Providence, you can get a bus or MTA train into Boston. You probably won't be there long enough to make it worth the while, but RIPTA does have monthly commuter passes.

Granted, having a car is easier. I spent a year on that base with out a car and did just fine.

Good to know, I know there are plenty of threads regarding OCS in p'cola, but not too many about RI. Also, if I take my cellphone, can I get it back when liberty is granted? What about a camera?

If you take your car, yes and yes. If not, then you may not get them back until candio phase or worst-case right before commissioning. Either way, keep em in your car or a friend's.

Slim- I'll be taking my SUV up from VA for the Jan 20th class, you're more than welcome to stow any of your gear there if you decide to fly.

I drove from Seattle to Norfolk in late October and had no problems up north. It is looking like I won't have to make the drive to R.I. until around March now (from Seattle), as I am still waiting on my ankle waiver to be approved!

Plenty of people (specifically from SoCal) did not take their cars in my class and they just stashed their crap in someone else's car. Just coordinate beforehand and hope they don't DOR on you.

Yea I thought about driving out there for the Feb 16th date, but my instincts also tell me to just fly. 2200 miles in the winter... doesn't sound fun, especially in a honda s2000. Hopefully I can find someone to stash my stuff. but what exactly would you need to stash??? Just things you want/need during liberty?

Hey Ken_gone_flying, how long did it take you to drive to Norfolk? Actually, I guess my real question is, have you planned out the drive to RI? I'll be driving from Seattle as well, and I'm trying to get an idea of how early to leave.

amoore, what kind of car do you have? and seriously, if i were to drive, is the snow gonna kill me? I'm from LA and don't know a thing or two about snow or driving in the snow or driving through snowy states... If you were planning a drive from LA to RI in the winter in a s2000, what/how would you prepare to get there alive?

Bangor, Washington to Ithaca, NY in the middle of January...towing my car behind a 26' U-Haul.

Don't be a pansy. If you want your car, drive your car.

Don't be an idiot. Plan many extra days, (5 as previously reccomended is a good start) and don't be afraid to stop if the weather dictates.

Let good judgement and slow, safe driving prevail and you'll be fine.

Having done ass tons of long distance driving, these are words to live by. Literally, no pun intended.

For all of you that haven't done cross country type driving, take what scoober said as law. Its saved my ass a few times. If you feel tired, pull off get a coffee or find a hotel. Pull off into a rest stop and walk around for a few. Its better to take a day or two longer than wind up injured or worse.

I speak from experience having fallen asleep at the wheel once... luckily, a trucker noticed and laid on his horn. I pulled off the road at the next exit, got a hotel and slept like a baby.. for about 13 hours.

i have another Idea. ship my car out to a friend in NY, fly to NY, drive from NY to Newport for OCS. =)

but if you drive there yourself, you get most of your expenses reimbursed correct?
