Not really OCS, but this thread gets enough traffic to help me - I'm confused on the difference between Pro-Rec and final select - is pro-rec for when you're still in school and can't report for a while and final is them saying 'yup, your slot is still open' right before you ship out?

Pro-rec is the board saying they recommend you for whatever you applied into. Final select is you signing on the dotted line and swearing in after your medical, security clearance, and PRT have been put through.

On a related note, what will be a problem for the security clearance? I don't have any problem in my personal background, but I have a few friends that have spent extensive time in China (and 2 are still there) and I was wondering if this will cause them some problems. I was interviewed for an AF friends clearance, and I know they ask about this, so I was wondering if that is a DQ problem.
Also, do they care if you have a problem child for a brother? I don't know what type of discharge he was given(as I said, black sheep), however he has a notoriously bad reputation and was in the navy reserves for about 5 months before he was no longer with them.
Thanks for the input!

I can tell you that problem siblings are not an issue, as mine certainly wasn't. Overall I'd say don't worry too much about the security clearance. While there may be concerns that will lead to more extensive checks, I don't think these things will disqualify you.

My brother has a felony conviction. My friends have each spent a year in Israel. You're fine.

Heres another one: I'll be graduating next Christmas, but I don't think that school will be offering any classes that I need next summer - if accepted, will they let me do OCS that summer, finish my last semester to graduate (that fall) and then ship out? (If it affects it, its my masters not bachelors).
Thanks

Waiver recommended. Once you have a waiver, you have a waiver. End of story. Just keep copies for when they lose your medical records. In the middle of OCS my entire medical record disappeared and was never found again.

All of the OCS pics that I have seen show guys wearing the 50s style black rim glasses. Is this standard issue or can you bring your own glasses? Are contacts not allowed at OCS?

I'm pretty sure BCGs are required for the most part. Might get to wear something else in candio phase. I'll let someone with actual knowledge answer that one.
Spot on and enjoy the BCG's.

If you wear the bcg's, get 2 small band-aids and wrap it around the parts that goes on your ears. I, and many people got sores from those glasses.

Depends on the DI, but yeah - it's pretty typical.

So do you bring your own sneaks with you to OCS or do they make you wear theirs? And I've heard all three on inserts: Yes/No/Don't get caught. Will they roll you back if your caught or something?

Wear your own. You may need/want to buy another pair for those days where your shoes get soaked and need to dry or for inspections. It's really not a big deal.:sleep_125

I only had one pair of running shoes. For RLP, the DI's do understand that dragging a candidate through goose poops leads to stains on shoes. So long as they are in decent shape, and all controllable discrepencies (goose poo chunks in the soles for instance)are taken care of, you should be good to go. My shoes were stained and I never got a hit for it.
