Hey guys I wasn’t able to find anything about this anywhere but I’m just curious: would a personal book to read, if brought to check-in, be considered contraband or could I have it in my hatch throughout training?

I brought a book. As long as it’s locked in your 2 drawer you’re fine. If caught left out or if you’re 2 drawer is unlocked for them to go through then you’ll get hit for it.

You can have it in your two-drawer. It doesn't hurt to bring if you have space for it in there, but I wouldn't expect to have much time for reading. You're going to be pretty crunched for time already between studying, sleep, watches, and inspection prep so making time for reading is going to be tough and not the smartest use of your time. You might have time for it on the weekends and in Candio phase (depending on your job).

I was gifted a subscription to Playboy back during my AOCS days. I never received an issue but I'm certain the DIs got a laugh out of it.

Note: I never actually saw a DI laugh.

You can probably get away with having a book, but seriously you have like no free time at ocs, when you can't be doing something productive. Prepping for rlp, studying B, C, D, studying for one of the 6 tests, Prepping for inspections, cleaning or pt'ing in your room. Before you bring a book make sure your the type of person with enough self discipline not to let it interfere with your priorities. In indoc every waking second will be spent prepping for rlp.
