Yes candidates are often encouraged to call cadence (at least my class was in later weeks) and yes you can be a "drill body" who will be the "go-to" guy for the can't-get-right's in your class who are marching completely out of step and have two left feet.
When I was there, DIs called cadence for the warmup lap. The actual runs were at full speed, so if you can call cadence you're not running fast enough.

As for drill bodies, yes they existed, but it went like this: "Drill body, in the morning I drive the bus. You can have them the rest of the day."

How does reporting to Pcola work when a class finishes right before Thanksgiving, Xmas, or any major holiday? Do they give you the same amount of time to get down there?

Yes, but you can take leave if you want. You'll get a "report No Later Than" date. You will be authorized a couple of days to get down there. If you want to take more in order to be home for Christmas or some other holiday then you'll have to take leave.

Do you have to report to API before you can request for leave or is there a way to do it remotely so you can go directly home after OCS?

No, you don't have to report to A-pool first. When I graduated OCS I had a report NLT date that was like a month after graduation. Graduation is on a friday and I got three days for travel if I remember correctly. So I had to report on Monday not to be charged leave, but if I reported at a later date (up to the NLT date) then I would have been charged leave for that time. A friend of mine did wait till his NLT date and he had something like -25 days of leave going in to API.

I somehow get the feeling that I may be said "drill body" in a month

SWO? What is this "SWO" you speak of?
Quick question... I have been hearing a lot about the PFT standards being lowered at OCS. Anyone have an updated minimum/maximum sheet for running/cu/pu? my google-fu lead to nothing... or, is this the common case of rumors flying around like herpes in a sorority? Thanks!

Don't worry about minimums. If you're sweating the mins, you SHOULD NOT be heading to OCS. Just kick ass, report in good shape and you'll be fine.

Chasejj.....here is the site for navy-prt standards for everyone (separated by age). I know my OR told me you needed to have a "good low" score as your IN-prt for OCS, but by all means strive to MAX out on everything.

Believe me, I've been preparing myself for OCS for a long time and cant wait for it come november 1st!

Reporting to OCS just able to do the minimums is a good way to make OCS many weeks longer and painful than it needs to be.

xmid....sorry if I'm confusing what you've wrote, but did you use some of your leave time after OCS graduation instead of reporting that monday?

I leave for OCS Nov.1st and when I graduate, I'd like a week or so to be with family & friends before I have to report to pcola for API.... is that the case for most people or does it depend on your career choice? Again sorry if I didn't understand correctly what you've posted.

Thanks

you will get a "arrive no later than" date.

as long as you don't arrive later than that date, you're in the clear. where you are between picking up your records in newport and walking through the doors at the quarterdeck at API is not known by the Navy. all they care about is you showing up prior to the "no later than" date.

so yes, go hang out with your family and friends. i drove from newport to north carolina to orlando before finally showing up in pensacola almost 3 weeks later.
