SWO vs Supply, Pros and Cons: Decisions Decisions

Spekkio

He bowls overhand.
Ok, so, while in the uniform shop today a guy who attrited from power school first said he was contemplating trying to lat transfer to supply, but then asked a SWO nuke about redesignating to SWO. His answer was "If I had known better, I would've gone supply." When asked if he did anything "cool" as a SWO, he scoffed and said an emphatic no.

You still a submarine CHOP?
Nope - I'm done. Never heard of a Chop standing COW. I stayed on the officer side of the watchbill (CC/JOOD) - stood dive maybe 10 times my entire tour.

Everyone's talking about bonuses here. If money's all you're interested in, compare the average starting salary of a post-first-tour SWO getting a civilian job to the average starting salary of a post-first-tour chop doing the same. I'll bet the Supply Officer comes home with the BMW most of the time.

I'm sure everyone here will agree, though. Don't select a community or career just because of money.

I've heard this a lot- so much in fact that I almost believe (almost). Are there any stats to back this up?

On your other point, without having been there and done that, I agree it seems silly to stay on just for the money. Still, it must be a proven retention tool or they wouldn't have it.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but there has only been like one post in this entire thread stating that SWO is a good community to go into. Which leads me to believe that either:
A) It is a community full of suck
B) All the SWO's are all standing a balls to 4 watch and are too busy to post or sleeping

So far, Supply in my mind is still superior. But as I said, I would take whatever the Navy gave me.

Let me double it for you then...SWO is a good community.

Maybe there aren't a lot of SWOs browsing an aviation forum, and they're ones that *may* still be wishing they could have gone pilot. Maybe you should visit a ship and see for yourself. Talk to some SWOs, talk to some Suppos, and draw your own conclusions.

But choose your rate, choose your fate man. If being a chop seems like your cup of tea, then do it and don't look back.

Both communities give you leadership, but Supply also gives you significant financial responsibilities that are incredibly appealing to a lot of companies. If you're the commo, weps, or whatever other divisions there are for SWO's, you may get some technical knowledge - but it will only be appealing to certain industries. On the other hand, a first tour submarine chop gets handed $20 million in inventory and a $2.5 million / yr operating budget. Tell me a single Fortune 500 company that wouldn't want a 28 yr old with that...

If you're looking for average starting salaries - I'm sure they're on the interweb somewhere.
