SWO vs Supply, Pros and Cons: Decisions Decisions

I agree. Do you really want a suppo who owns a BMW? Being a car is one of the worst investments you could have. That's why you see every CPA driving a used car. :icon_mi_1

Why would it matter if Suppo drives a BMW, particularly a 3 series? It's in the same price band as SUVs and other popular rides.

As to CPAs driving used cars.....my sister is a CPA and she drives a new SUV as do the 2 CPAs in my neighborhood. (My CPA drives a Volvo that he bought new). You ought to get out in the world a bit before you start making pronouncements.

Being a car? I guess I'd prefer my "Chop" to be good at math and Excel at expense of grammar skills, but being a car? Your typing out of sync with thought train? Or PWI?

Ok, so, while in the uniform shop today a guy who attrited from power school first said he was contemplating trying to lat transfer to supply, but then asked a SWO nuke about redesignating to SWO. His answer was "If I had known better, I would've gone supply." When asked if he did anything "cool" as a SWO, he scoffed and said an emphatic no.

It all depends though, and as stated, your mileage will vary.

If I could do it all again from scratch and had to be on a DDG again, ideally I'd be STRIKE or EWO w/VBSS as collateral duty.

STRIKE and EWO are friggin cake 1st tour divo billets...you have the "smartest" rates available to first tour DivOs and a relatively small division. The LCPO is more than capable of running things, and you're usually top heavy since your new guys typically report in as E-5s. You get a Top Secret clearance to boot. All your gear is electronics which typically works well and doesn't go down as often as the other electronics such as AEGIS or Sonar. If you're STRIKE, you can't be assigned any GQ station b/c you have to be available in CIC. EWOs...if there's a division that doesn't really need a DivO, that'd be it.

VBSS School is hands down the coolest school I've been to so far...you shoot more 5.56 rounds in a single day than most SWOs probably do in their entire careers. CQB training, climbing/rappelling, water survival...lotta high speed tactical shit.
Not to mention the prerequisite school which is essentially 2 weeks of paintball.

Unfortunately, that's just the ideal(IMO)...there are plenty of less pleasant jobs that somebody needs to do, and you usually don't get a whole lot of say in where you end up when you first show up.

75k is still certianly a lot.

I wonder how this sits with Suppo's serving alongside SWO's that are making substantially more than them? At the 03-04 level that is.

Retention bonuses are there for a reason: The Navy needs to dole out the cash to certain communities to get JOs to stay after their initial commitment.

That should tell you something about the communities if the SWOs are offered $75K while Supply doesn't have a retention bonus (that I'm aware of).

A SuppO driving around BMW 3 series is nothing, especially when you can have wings and drive around a sweet Prosche! ;)

I imagine EWOS is electronic warfare, but what does Strike actually do if somebody else is running the AEGIS, "fire ze missiles?"

Also, who (from SWO-JO land) gets to go to VBSS school?

@BigRed: What class would you choose if you could go back? How many JO BO's does your ship have?

Wow this thread just keeps on going.

I was using this thread to rationalize my decision to go Supply over SWO, I know Supply has definite personal benefits for me but, it isn't somthing I truly want to do. As someone said on here, choose your rate, choose your fate. I don't want to look back and say, jee I wish I would have done what I really wanted to and not what was best if I went back to civvy land.

After thinking about all of the discussions taking place here, I have decided that I am going SWO, if my first option doesn't work out.

I like the idea of being in command, running a division and what not. The work that a SWO does seems to interest me more in the long run. I want to drive a ship, not a desk. In all honesty, Supply seems like a job that could be done in the civilian world. I know there are lots of opportunities that a Supply officer can do but the vast majority of their career will be looking over supply depots, warehouses, and the likes. In all honesty, If I wanted to do that I could go get a civvy job that pays more and better hours. I am not bashing Supply at all and I would do it, but if I had the choice I would go SWO.

I know SWO is long hours and an ardous life but I believe to me, it will be worth it. If I am going to be in the military I just as well do something that I can't do as a civilian! As I said before though, I will take whatever the Navy gives me and be proud of it.

Lookin forward to being haze gray and underway!

So, by 'certain communities' you of course mean all URL designators. I think that tells you more about overall retention of JOs than a comparison of SWO vs. Supply.

My understanding is that it is senior supply officers the Navy has trouble retaining due to opportunities outside in the civilian sector.
