stay within the regs and no one gives a flying fvck
some of ya'll really need to see through the TBS/OCS brainwashing sometimes.
squeeze said:Interesting... I got a tattoo while at TBS and I never told my SPC yet didn't get the boot. People get worked up over stupid things that no one cares about - which is very prevelant in TBS. Unless even more nonsensical orders are being passed around there, don't sweat it.
Maybe I should be on the lookout for the Marine cops now... coming to take my wings away for an illegal TBS-era tat.
Marine Corps policy is gonna be a little different. Need to be tasteful, yes. All over your arms and trash like that ... doubtful. It would be a safe bet to make sure that most of them are covered by PT gear. A few exposed might not be an issue, but anything too eccentric will be frowned upon.I have many, many, many tattoos on both of my arms. Although I was asked about them in my interview process, no board member commented on them in an adverse way. My feeling is this: As long as the tattoos are tasteful and able to be covered in dress uniform, they should not be an issue. Now, this is not the official Navy policy, to be sure. But, common sense would seem to apply. Many of us attempting to become commissioned officers have been in the Navy for well over a decade. Tattoos are a time honored right of passage for naval service members and should be viewed accordingly.
As always, this is just my opinion and does not, in any way, represent the Navy’s position.
Sorry, I meant they can't be visible in a t-shirt, ie Pt shirt of Charlie shirt. Leg tats are alright, as long as tasteful. Thanks for the clarification, phrogpilot.I belive the Marine Corps' policy is that they can't be visible in uniform, not PT gear. As long as they don't show in Charlies, you're good.
None of y'all had to sign a contract saying you won't get anymore tattoos?
Just a SWAG, but it was probably a promise not to get any while your package is being considered, e.g. you get that forehead tatt you've always wanted right after the OSO inventoried what you had before. Either that, or he was making a generalization regarding the USMC no offensive tattoo/none neck or higher/no incredibly dumb tatts policy, which is poorly enforced, regardless.
Bottom line, wait until the new-car smell is off your bars before you get that bulldog tattoo. You'll probably still get something, but probably make a more tasteful choice than having the Iwo Jimo flagraising tattooed accross your back.
To give a contradictory aside, legend has it that Smedley Butler had an enormous Eagle, Globe, and Anchor put over his whole chest by some Pacific tribesman. Later, it was marked up by bullet woulds. He was somewhat upset by that.
