The Eyes have it - All things Vision-related

Hello all,

I've been digging through this forum but have not been able to find an answer to my question so maybe someone can help.

Has anyone who failed the depth perception test at MEPS actually been able to improve or train their eyes such that they could eventually pass the NAMI or MEPS DP test? I failed the DP test at MEPS recently and want to know if there is a possibility to train my eyes to eventually pass the test. I’ve read plenty of examples of applicants consulting civilian doctors and getting a pilot billet but I have yet to see if any of those applicants were able to pass the DP test once they got to OCS. Are people in that situation actually able to train their depth perception to meet Navy standards or are they faking it until they make it?

I’ve scheduled an ophthalmologist appointment to answer this same question but maybe someone here can give some insight.

Thanks,

SNA select heading to OCS next month.

I have -1.25 astigmatism in both eyes.

Should I be concerned? I would have thought it’s an auto disqualification, but some comments I’ve been reading suggest otherwise.

Yes, and based on the documents I have found I would be disqualified.

However, a few comments throughout this site suggested there might be hope.
I'm -1.25 in my L eye. R is a little better.
You'll be fine. Its not even a waiver. You'll have to wear corrective lenses in the plane.

Looking for some information on the weight of a civilian eye doctor's comments on vision/their findings vs. the Navy's:

- Before I began the application process with my recruiter I went to get my eyes checked with a civilian eye doctor was told that I have 20/15.
- Took the eye exam for my physical and was told I have 20/20 in my right eye and slightly worse in my left eye.
- Recruiter said to go back to civilian eye doctor to see what their professional opinion is, and they concluded that I still have 20/15 vision.

Not sure if anyone else out there has had this happen before where there are conflicting comments from the Navy eye exam vs. an actual doctor's, but just looking to see if the civilian eye doctor's comments will hold any weight when my entire packet is submitted to board. Thanks.

It goes back and forth. In the past and I'm sure now, applicants have shopped eye doctors to find those who will "approve" their vision to be within requirements, only to DQ when they go to OCS/NAMI. You can probably search and find some recent info, including the aviation boards.

Is that uncorrected vision? In the end it doesn't matter what the civilian eye doc says it only matters what the NAMI eye doc says.

Civilian eye exam won’t mean anything when you get to NAMI. However, if your eyes are 20/40 or better uncorrected, you don’t have to worry about it.

@Mouselovr beat me to the punch. Both vision scores are within Pilot, so why are you worried?

I could be wrong but is 20/40 the cutoff for prospective pilots? Can pilots where glasses?
20/40 is the cutoff for uncorrected vision.
If you are less than 20/20 uncorrected but 20/40 uncorrected or better, you will be given glasses.
