The ACAA isn’t new. This epidemic has really been the last five years or so-with last year being the worst.
It’s really about people being shitheads and feeling that they’re entitled and can buy their chihuahua a service dog vest and not have to pay a fee.

I blame the internet! Seriously, see what the first hits are when you Google 'Emotional Support Animals' and you'll find all the info you need to drag your emotional support ____ onboard your next flight.

I absolutely was going to add that as part of the reason-so much BS out there...and he problem is they do not care how many other people are inconvenienced by them-or allergic etc

There's nothing that can give you an existential kind of moment like watching someone bring an emotional support pelican aboard a flight, or watching two emotional support dogs fighting in the aisle, or taking a shit in the cabin. You just sit there and wonder if we aren't living in the twilight zone.

It's gotten so bad that old cartoons about sneaking pets onto trains and things don't even land anymore, because kids don't understand a world where that was considered unacceptable or wrong.

Update on Spirit - Stuart mentioned in the article is my neighbor and good friend - great guy and tireless ALPA warrior. (His son is finishing up TBS and will be reporting to P'cola in March for API)

A great day to be employed at Spirit! Wow.

In a statement Wednesday, the union said pilots are in store for a 43 percent increase in pay rates on the day the contract is signed, as well as “double-digit contributions to pilots’ retirement plans.”

The devil is in the details. From what I’m told by the couple of Spirit pilots I know the tentative agreement is dog shit. It gets pay raises but gives up work rules. You can always get Pay back but once you give up work rules, they gone forever.

Example, they’re getting higher pay but changing block or better from per leg to per duty period. So if they fly multiple legs in a duty period they can easily loose time they were paid for in the past.

One of my friends exact words were “They want us to give up work rules for a Jet Blue contract? Fuck that!”

So no, not really a great day. Mediocre at best.

Just learned something!

So the lesson here is don't work for Spirit or Jet Blue. Got it.
Unless it’s for currency’s or time building or a place holder waiting for the majors. If that’s the case then it may be better than the regionals but probably slower to left seat. So check 121 on the resume but not so much PIC.

Eh, you know back pre- 9/11 the same thing was said about a low cost Texas based company called Southwest Airlines... for a good 15 year period there after they were the cats meow and people counted themselves lucky to get calls at JetBlue and Spirit and could make a life there. They were small, expanding and hiring pilots while the legacy pilot groups were giving away scope to lay the ground work for the RJ craze and getting furloughed.

The airline industry is cyclical. These days places like Spirit and JetBlue aren’t considered tier one airlines but they sure aren’t bad place holders while you try to get on with your final destination. You can still make $200k+ a year as a captain at either getting a decent amount of time off. Most people can at least survive on that and I think given a choice that most pilots would rather get “stuck” at a place like JetBlue than a regional in the event of another large scale economic downturn.
