Voluntary Separation Pay

"Does IRAD get any play"

As I understand it. If you are IRAD and a non probationary officer (ie over 5yrs) then they have to pay you separation pay. So this is a good deal because It gives you the opportunity to potentially double your severance package.

I heard that if you are involuntarily separated that you are eligible for unemployment. I don't know what your eligibility will be with the VSP.
Yeah I know about all of the moral compass stuff but three months is not a lot of time to transition and the mortgage has to be paid.

One one hand, I would like to get Big Navy to pay me while I get my Masters (I'm going to ROTC duty), on the other hand I would rather leave with some cash if I am not going to make O4 and get the bonus.

I know a lot of ROTC guys that had to drop out of their masters programs to do an IA.

I don't know if it covers ROTC and staff jobs (since you still get flight pay).

ROTC and staff jobs are flying billets (usually). They just don't involve flying. You're still paid flight pay and on a flight status.

Did I understand correctly? USNRs may be IRAD at the end of the fiscal year if we don't take the VSP? The only reason I'm still USNR is because Uncle Navy sent out a message about a year or two ago saying all new commissions would be regular, and all current USNR officers would be automatically augmented. I've been asking since VTs and HTs when this was going to happen, but all I ever got was blank stares in STUCON. I thought the Augmentation part of the Transfer/Augmentation board was a thing of the past. If anyone has anything to substantiate the above rumors, it would be much appreciated.

Don't be surprised. It happened in 91/92. I don't believe a single USNR got orders for a two year period out of Whidbey, everyone IRAD'ed regardless of performance. I had gone TAR at that point and the VR selection boards we did had USNR guys with amazing records show up that had been tossed on the wayside while the dirt-baggiest USN got orders. Just the way the law was written and pretty much out of everyone's hands.

The IRAD of USNR is only a rumor at this point. All Officers were augmented as of 01JUN06 anyway.

What's IRAD? Is that a RIF (reduction in force)? Or a term for screw-job bad deal orders?

IRAD = Involuntary Release from Active Duty

IRAD is how you accomplish a RIF

I noticed that NavPersCom pulled down the link for Force Shaping. I am speculating that they had an overwhelming response.

The NPC link is down, but the links in this thread will still get you to the site.
