What is it like to be an NFO?

Well I dont think I am superior... kinda silly to think I meant that... I was just asking like what does an NFO do, and in my situation, where I love being in control of the aircraft I was just questioning if it was worth it for me to apply for that position. I do not even know what they do entirely... I have a doctors appt to check out the thing that I lacking a little bit to become a pilot right now.. So I guess I will pm you with what an NFO does.

Well, if we're going to start vetting new members, then we should probably start vetting the people that provide 'answers' to new members' questions as well. I get it, new people are annoying as fuck and NFOs are important. Nevertheless, in your initial reply one paragraph you're discussing the merits of being an NFO and offering to help him via PM, then in the next paragraph you're deconstructing his thoughts and concluding that he doesn't belong in your wardroom. Did you really expect him to come crawling to you like a lapdog with such a schizophrenic and editorialized reply? Your profile says you joined barely a month ago. Maybe you should spend some time observing first before spouting off on people.

Considering you didn't even read what actually transpired (yeti deleted most of what he said), your comments are based on not knowing the full story and add very little to no value.

Ok, again, let me explain: hugeyetti posted this...

Hey all, so I might not qualify for pilot application and might only qualify for NFO. I am a pilot right now, have all my ratings and love to be in control of an aircraft. Is there any upsides to being an NFO? Like is it even worth it for someone like me to go NFO?

Being an NFO is awesome, especially if you are in an NFO-centric community. I chose it first, and I have absolutely zero regrets. We have really difficult and important jobs just like the pilots, and these jobs are necessary to the mission success of the air wing, just like the pilots.
If and when you get to the fleet, you will see that any NFO vs pilot shit is just a joke, and deep down everyone sees what each person brings to the fight. There are many upsides to being an NFO...pm me if you want to know in detail what a Hawkeye NFO does.

With that being said, I do not think it is "worth it" for "someone like you" to become an NFO. You have to want it. If you truly don't want to earn NFO wings deep down, flight school will be very tough for you.
If you want to be a pilot, but you are NPQ for military aviation, don't apply for naval aviation. I wouldn't want someone like you in my ready room who thinks they are superior to the career itself because they were once a civilian pilot.

But his initial post, before all of this silly exchange began, did not necessarily warrant the reply that you gave. Again, you spend one paragraph talking about the the merits of NFO stuff and offer to help him via PM. But then you cap it off with several bizarre assumptions. You infer that he doesn't want it and that he thinks he is superior. Was that really necessary? We keep talking about how the dude escalated things in the context of the subsequent exchange, but I'm simply drawing attention to the fact that you escalated it to begin with, which generally is not very good ROE for the good guy. Not exactly taking the higher road.

I really don't care about having the last word, but I must say that I don't think what I said was in any way out of line.

Yeah, maybe I was terse...but this is naval aviation, not the boy scouts. I was being completely honest with him.

My first paragraph was answering his question on "the upsides" to being to an NFO, in which I told him I loved it and asked him to PM me if he wants to know what a e2 tube monkey does.

My answer in the second paragraph was based off of his question on if it is even "worth it" for "someone like him" to become an NFO, in which I gave him an honest opinion. My opinion just happens to be "no".

I don't know about that. This guy deserved any smackdown he got--he's a flagrant douche, and doesn't realize it. I've seen plenty of people come in with appropriate respect and attitude and they're treated well.

Because it was going downhill fast and I tried to keep the parts that were somewhat relevant to the thread. It left some context out but kept things cleaner on the thread. I don't often edit a thread and it may not have been the most elegant job but I didn't want the thread to get derailed too much.

Geze, this got crazy. Again, I am sorry if I offended anyone. Not my intentions at all. As I said before, I just spoke too soon with no knowledge of what dumb shit I was saying. I did not mean for any of what I said to come across as negative. Hummer was being honest about things, in not the best way... but still he was being honest. So again, my apologies. O an the one comment I deleted was just one that sounded a little "whiney". But I only deleted one.
