I am new to this forum. Looking at applying for the NFO designation. I am 27 with prior service, and undergrad degree. Just starting to collect information, and where to go from here. I have reached out to an OR, and he recommended I review this forum for more information. I know I will have to take the OAR and ASTB, and from reviewing this forum. It looks like a competitive score for NFO is over 50 6/6/6. Is this accurate? Just looking for feedback, and how to properly study and prepare for the OAR and ASTB. Thanks!

NFO applicants must have not passed their 27th birthday on Commissioning. Commissioning is forecasted to be on 1 February 2013. Waivers may be granted on a month-for-month basis up to 48 months for Active Duty Served prior to their 27th birthday, to a maximum age of 31.

Hit up your OR and see if the age limit is accurate. You might need a waiver.

I have some ASTB study tips in my signature if you're interested as well. Competitive NFO scores are at the top of this post. You can also see a pool of who applied for NFO at the last aviation board here. You can see someone did not qualify with a 50/5/6/5 while other made it with a 55 5/6/6. It's that last number (FOFAR Score) and the 2nd number (AQR) that matter the most for NFO. AQR is a combination of the math portion (and mechanics? Someone correct me here) of the OAR and the ANIT section of the test. FOFAR is that navigation portion mostly. Remove all doubt and just study up for a 7/7/7.

True. It's easy if you are prior service. Email the community manager and request one. They will give prior service a waiver 24 months for SNA and 48 months for SNFO.

If he is prior service he would be working with an OR, people with OR's are not supposed to be contacting anyone other than their OR, when that happens calls often result from a point above the NRD going down usually the OR is the last person to get talked to.

Is this a part of the OAR and ASTB testing, and would someone be able to elaborate more on AQR, PFAR, and FOFAR? To be competitive I would need at least 6 for each one if not 7. Is the max score a 10 for each category. This is a very informative forum. All advice is appreciated.

OAR stands for Officer Aptitude Rating. It is a test of Math, Mechanics, and Reading. The ASTB is the Aviation Standard Test Battery. It is the OAR along with AQR, PFAR, and FOFAR (the three numbers users list after their OAR). The first is just a aviation qual rating. Basically, do you have the ability to pass the scholastic portion of the aviation pipieline. The next score is basically pilot aptitude, and the last is navigator aptitude.

Score range from 2 (I think) to 9 and are bell curved like the OAR.

Hello, Im taking my first ASTB in 2 weeks for a pilot position. I didn't plan on putting a second choice because i really wanted to only to piloting, but i have reconsidered a NFO position as i think i will be satisfied with receiving that offer if i don't get selected as an aviation officer.

My question is (assuming i get decent ASTB scores) if i do not get selected for aviation officer, is there a good chance that i will get my second choice of NFO? Is NFO a lot less competitive?

My gpa is 2.9 in a non technical major
All heathy with 20/20 vision.

Don't apply for NFO and Pilot if you prefer Pilot. Per @RUFiO181 aviation board threads. Just go nail your ASTB.

Aviation is a different kind of competitive. It's all about ASTB scores. Other jobs are competitive with LoRs and OAR.

How about for the physical @ MEPS is this when they do all the necessary testing like eye tests (color blindness, sight, and depth perception)? If so, what are qualifying and disqualifying factors.. This would be for Pilot and NFO related.

i took the ASTB first time and got 62 7-8-8. from my weeks of research im assuming that isnt bad lol.

Yes, they will test for color blindness, Depth perception, near/far sighted and correctability. You would have to search for specifics on the actual numbers, but for NFO and Aviator it is pretty strict. (obviously)
