04NOV24 Supply Board

I didn’t post my stats but since I’m waiting I guess I’ll go ahead. I applied for Supply and SWO. Denied on sight for SWO
Currently CWT1
3.1 GPA
44 OAR
TIS 10
Excellent Low PT
3 LORs (1xO8, 2xO6)
4 Appraisals (1xO6, 3xO5)
JCOM + MOVSM
About 300+ hours in Sea cadets for community service.
Nervous as all get out because they accepted so many last cycle, which is going to limit the amount of people they take this cycle. That’s probably why they closed the next board.

I’m a civilian, and I’m probably not the most reliable source for appraisal. So just take this for what it’s worth; just a semi-old guy’s opinion and input.

When I see your stats I see commitment. You have 10 years in and didn’t stay stagnant. Where many would get comfortable and start to get soft, you took that time to complete a bachelors degree. Instead of getting fat and indulgent, you’ve invested time in maintaining physical fitness. I see time invested in career advancement over a long stretch of time. To me, that’s impressive and something to be very proud of. Your LORs would also suggest that you’ve taken the time to stand out amongst leadership during your 10 years. Your GPA and OAR are a bit on the low end, and I can see where that might be a hindrance. BUT even if that stands in your way on this round, I believe from your track record that you’re the type of person that’s determined enough to take a few extra classes, study, and bring both scores up and have an even more impressive packet this time next year. Stay optimistic, my friend. You’re kicking ass 💪

Why SWO/Supply and not MCWO?

Depends on his degree. I know his experience helps but that doesn’t mean he wants to work in that field anymore. I’ve heard great things about supply. Idk about swo I just know a lot of TIS they aren’t taking right now.
Fair point about the degree.

I'm mostly curious for my own purposes. I'm putting in my third package for MCWO. It's the only IWC designator that will waive beyond 10 years TIS (aside from CWE), so it seems to be a good prospect for those of us that have been in for a while. From someone in aviation, the proverbial grass of IWC seems greener than what I deal with now; but I'll admit that my perception may not be realistic.

The reason they are looking at those with less TIS is longevity, which does involve commitment but the reason they have started capping TIS is that data showed when a person becomes an officer the more TIS they have the less likely they are to stay much past 20 after becoming retirement eligible. There are of course exceptions but those exceptions don't outweigh the issues big navy was seeing.

The other thing is the boards look at best qualified, for example if all other things are equal a person with an average GPA who keeps applying and getting denied won't stand a chance with a person with a very high GPA.

Before I was a CWT1 I was an AM2. So I know exactly about that grass.
Intel life is chill, but coming from the flight deck to sitting at a desk all the time has made me sort of bitter and lazy. There honestly isn’t a drive or job satisfaction in this field. Quality of life in Intel is by far the best in the Navy. Job satisfaction is piss poor.
I want job fulfillment which is why I decided to pick other jobs. I would honestly be miserable being a MCWO or IP

If I decided to go for MCWO I would qualify. I meet the requirements according to the instruction because of my schooling. I just don’t like Intel 😖. Its boring. I miss that high speed life which is why I was willing to pick SWO but they don’t want the Sailors that will retire in 10 years. And the AMDO community is too small. My daughter mom just commissioned as an AMDO last year and she was like 1 of 7.

Understood. I was mostly aiming to encourage him to improve the things he can change (GPA and OAR) and try to stay motivated/optimistic with the things he can’t change if he doesn’t get selected this go around. It’s been my professional experience that employees lose the drive to work hard and stay dedicated for any length of time if they feel that their hard work and dedication isn’t recognized, and if they feel their hard work and dedication isn’t going to get them where they want to be. I just would hate for someone to lose optimism and call it quits after 10 years of dedication and hard work. So I acknowledged his hard work and dedication, and I encouraged him to stay hardworking and dedicated if it doesn’t work out this time. Just out here keeping the fire burning 💪
