1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Got any suggestions for flight games? I've just been hitting the sim and COD with inverted controls.
I was playing a lot of Warthunder and using the HOTAS stick and throttle on my Xbox. Just got me used to stick and throttle manipulation. The ASTB simulator is the best for actually getting ready, but I just can't play that for 4 hours straight on a Saturday and have a good time.

I hear you man. I just been aiming for 20 times a day intermittently and spending the rest of my time with COD, studying, and pumping iron. I just got my stick and throttle in the mail today. I used to play a lot of flight/dogfighting sims back when DOS was the cool kid on the block, maybe I'll blow the dust off em.

I know that COD worked well for a lot of people but I really think that since the test uses a stick and throttle that any game with the stick and throttle will be more useful than using a normal controller. Good luck!

I am mostly just using COD to get used to those inverted controls and hand eye coordination. It does appear to be working.

Any practice with inverted controls will help, but I felt that Jantzen's was the best practice. Tracking two separate targets while completing the dichotic listening is a tough skill to acquire otherwise IMO. I was on Jantzen's for 20-30 minutes per day, and that was sufficient for me

Hello everyone! I took my second attempt at my astb and got a 5 8 7 with a 51 on my oar and a 54 on the simulation portion. I felt very confident on the test studying a lot. Did not practice at all for the simulation portion but used to play a lot of video games. I have a 3.9 GPA majoring in IT. Should I take the third attempt of my astb? Went in with subpar sleep and know I could've done way better on it. Asking this question probably seems repetitive in this forum, but could use some help from like-minded people.

You’ve touched on it, check out the various aviation boards threads and see where you stack, many have excel sheets that list those who’ve been selected or not.

Hey everyone, just took my first attempt today. Came back with a 50/5/6/5. Pretty surprised at my scores, I have been studying pretty consistently for the last month. Definitely harder than I thought it would be. But my recruiter didn't tell me to kick rocks so fingers crossed.

I started with a 43 4/5/4 and retook and got a 54 7/8/7

So hopefully that’s some motivation! I studied a lot as well!

Best advice, now you’ve seen the test you understand the format. Develop a strategy and execute it.

What I did was make a list for each section and then date it everytime studied a subject

Ex
Math
Probability: 5/20/23, 5/23/23
Properties of exponents: 6/1/23
Volume: 6/2
Geometry:
Arithmetic sequence

That way I could track and make sure I studied everything

Next piece of advice use the gouges as an overview but don’t use it as your only study source. I drew from the gouges to make a list of topics, went to YouTube searched the topic, the googled pdf worksheets. Kutasoftware had the best worksheets at around the same level of difficulty.

You got this!

Hm. Could be for your specific geographical area there just aren't many applicants. I know my Marine recruiter personally reccomended not taking it again if I get the qualifying scores. He also said it was pretty rare for people to do worse on their 2nd bite though.

Good advice, thank you. I'm going to try this out.

Yeah my recruiter said he doesn't get many applicants. Most apparently lose interest in their wait times for OCS, and since they don't swear you in until right before they send you to OCS, apparently a lot of the applicants just don't show. He even said my ASTB scores are probably good enough to get in, but I'm definitely going for a retake just to be safe.

Are you going SNA or SNFO? Both?
