Hi guys, I'm not understanding this proportion question. "A field can be plowed by 12 machines in 7 hours. If four machines are in need of repair and cannot be used, how many hours will it take to plow the field?" The answer on the practice test is 10.5 hours, but after double checking my math I don't understand how it's not 4.67 hours. Do you not just cross multiply and solve for X like other proportion questions?
This is a problem where the amount of work stays the same. It takes 12*7= 84 machine hours to plow the field. The same field is to be plowed so 84 machine hours are needed to plow the field, but with 12-4=8 machines. Set up the formula 8 machines * X hours = 84 machine hours. The solution is 10.5 hours.

Ah that makes sense. Thanks so much

I just recently took the OAR portion of the ASTB (will be returning to take the second half of it soon); however, out of the three components of the OAR portion did the math section stump me the most. Is there any way to study for those harder questions on the math section? I've always been pretty solid at math (graduated with a b.s. in physics) and completed almost every math prep I could find online and on these forums; however, only after a few easy questions at the start did the questions become extremely difficult and/or time consuming.

What did you score on the OAR? The questions getting difficult fast could just mean you were doing pretty well. Did you find the worksheets in Kyle’s guide to be easy?

I actually don't know yet. Long story short, the exam software was crashing every 15 min or so. And because of that I have to return soon to finish the rest of the astb to see my score. I also suspect that because of the software crashing frequently that it used up my time because I remember having finished three questions with about 37 min left, the exam crashing, and resuming with 27 min left after having them resolve the issue.

And if I remember correctly, I'd say I had a pretty easy time with the worksheets on that google drive - give or take a few problems .

That's interesting that they let you come back to finish the rest.

If the math questions got very hard for you early on in the test, then you were doing very good. The test wants to see at what level of math you're at.

Did you study using the practice books? if so what were you scoring on the practice exams? what concepts were giving you a hard time? were there calculus/trig-type questions? Right now I'm studying for the math section and the highest level math I saw was a pre-calc/calc 1 question involving integration/derivatives.

what practice books are you speaking of? in terms of physical study material, i have a 2021-22 trivium oar prep book, astb-e prep book, and mometrix prep book. I'd usually miss like 1-2 question - usually due to simple calculation mistakes. the type of questions that were stumping me on the exam were longer, thought-out word problems with ranging topics from "how to write the sum of 7+8 in base 4", "if option A offered a $5000 rebate, how much would option b need to offer in tax write off for both options to be equal" (i think i'm misquoting the question but general idea is there). I could possibly solve them with time but since my exam was crashing every minute and the fact I wasn't really expecting questions of that caliber real quick, it kind of threw me off a bit.

yeah, those books are what I'm talking about and those are basically the same ones I used. I think you did well in the math section based on what you said. You definitely should have a higher score than average.

ASTB Prep App Users,

The newest update is now available; among other things, it contains two more maps for question variety and an option to show you the question image orientation and position on the reference map. More maps and features are coming out soon. Sorry for the delay; I got super sick over the weekend. I'll keep you all posted on any progress, and feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Anyone have a number for an officer recruiter office in/around San Diego? The number I found online for the santee office goes unanswered. I've tried calling at different times ranging from 7 am to 6 pm. Trying to see if I can schedule the astb as the office where I had it scheduled this week called and said their system is down and my appointment has been canceled.

Welcome to the Navy. Had the same thing happen with my officer recruiter in AR. Hit up the Navy live chat and give them some of your information and ask your query to them directly. Hope that helps!

Two Scoops,
Should it update automatically, or am I gonna have to uninstall and reinstall?

It should update automatically overnight, but since Apple approved it this morning, you may need to update it manually if you want to use the most updated version today.

Hello.

I am studying using Barron's guide and came across the attached problem. I am not 100% sure how the correct answer was worked out.

Perhaps I am missing something but in the provided diagram, wouldn't gear B, if it were rotating, be affecting all the gears? Or am I misinterpreting the question and what it actually means by "Gear B is intended to mesh with" is "which gear would Gear B be able to rotate if aligned properly"?

The correct answer choice, according to the Barron book, was C with the explanation being that gears A and D are in constant mesh and F is too small.
