Hey everyone, I took my first ASTB today. Unfortunately, I did not get the scores I wanted, or thought I'd get from how much I studied. Before I go further, I'd like to say I took my math yesterday, the system crashed and they said I'd have to come back and finish today. So, I continued this morning, and the test crashed about 5-6 more times. Was not a fan of that experience and I will be going to a different location in 31 days. I also did not like their X52 at all, but maybe I got too used to my own.

My final score was 46 4/5/5. I am very disappointed in this as I've studied for two months or more. I am fine with my OAR score, for that I honestly only care to pass it. But my ANIT and performance scores are insanely low, especially when compared to my sim scores on the app and the amount of ANIT cram cards I did. I watched a million aviation YouTube videos, did the UAV flashcards on top of all the stuff on the app. I truly felt like I was at the peak of the sims and ANIT knowledge. Also, because I am active duty I already knew a lot of nautical and historical stuff. I was super confident while in the sims this morning too. Just very disappointed but not giving up. Calling a different office and hopefully taking another test in December.

Hey man, I would say try to keep studying the UAV portion. Try to get every single one correct in a quick succession. And as far as the stick and throttle portion goes I would really prioritize getting all the dichotic listening correct over being super close to the targets. That seems to be what worked for me. On the app I was getting 20/20 consistently with like a 1.4-1.6 sec average, Terrain was usually 17-20/20 with a 9-13 sec average, and I swore I heard it all right, but something definitely didn't go right somewhere I suppose. Thanks man.

I'll be meeting with a recruiter, this Friday more than likely, to talk a bit more about becoming a Naval Aviator. I did mention that I wasn't interested in being an NFO, at least not as much as I am interested in being an aviator. He said we would talk more about it when I meet in person but he recommends that I add NFO as one of my designators since you're allowed up to 3. I can't remember, so please correct me, but if I did add NFO as another designator, wouldn't that lower my chances of being an aviator?

It doesn't lower your chances but, you may get selected for NFO. And if you reject NFO the Navy may not pick you up again. Only put NFO if you are 100% ok with being a NFO.

Only apply for what you want to be, if you are not interested in being an NFO don't put it down.

There have been times when they really needed NFO's and anyone that put both SNA and SNFO was immediately given a Pro Y for SNFO and declined for SNA.

I am curious as to where you went to study for the test? I am looking to be taking the OAR test probably in the next month. I am currently working with an Officer Recruiter, but I want to prepare myself for what will be on the OAR instead of with the ASVAB. I currently have the ASVAB book and know a decent amount on it but I have been told the OAR test is different.

Thank you for any information that you can give me to better prepare myself for the test.

I used the ASTB Prep app, Barons ASTB book, the google drives linked here, cram flash cards for ANIT stuff, tons of YouTube videos on topics you’re not great at, and just what the people on the forum say about their own experiences when taking it.

Also another question for people who took the ASTB already. From memory the emergency procedures for the test explained the instructions as “E-Knob to low” for example. For that I would go all the way right because when calibrating the throttle, turning it right brought it to 0%, does that sound correct? Just want to make sure that wasn’t something I was doing wrong.

Hmm I don’t exactly remember but on my test I believe the values were either 0%, 100% or 50%. Try it out on the jantzen sim, I thought that was pretty close to the real thing. I don't exactly remember which way you turn the knobs on the real test though.

I just wanted to know if the terrain identification part was timed. So the score that you get for terrain identification doesn't rely on how fast you answer the question? For the ASTB Prep app the terrain identification part is on a 30 second timer and there's also a learning mode that has no timer. I've seen some posts that mention this part of the ASTB was just a right/wrong test and wasn't like the UAV test that required speed. I wonder if it may just be better to study with no timer if that is the case.

I believe there terrain portion was timed, it was probably 30 seconds like the app.
