I quit my full-time job and ended up taking a job as a hiking guide for the past couple of months prior to OCS. Was able to still stay in shape because I was on a flexible work schedule/ outdoors. It was freaking sweet getting paid to see the country.... now its the winter and im counting down the days to OCS (ill be it I'm currently a little bored but the experience was worth it)

I know other people worked as bartenders, hung out with their families, worked part-time ect..... Others just stuck with their full-time job and quit right before OCS (ie the lame choice).

Ya that sounds like the perfect way to do it, in what part of the country were you a guide?

Okay that’s so cool. I’m hoping I can go part time and stay remote. I had the conversation with my boss about my plans already lol went really well actually told me to let him know so I can train my replacement.

PNW. I was already living there.
You all don't have to do anything crazy, but when you ALL get your PROREC-YS, I highly recommend doing something prior to OCS that's been on your bucket list.

Obviously, individual circumstance dictates one's flexibility.

I think I filled that out before enlisting, then most of my clearance investigation was completed during dive school (pretty early in my training.) I don’t know at what point you need secret clearance, but I know at the TS/SCI level the backlog is huge and can take a while. I don’t think aviation requires above a secret though, which should go much faster.
All Pilot/NFO's get TS/SCI. That process begins once you check into Schools Command in Pensacola.

When any of you civilian guys/gals get that pro rec Y, enjoy that last bit of freedom to the fullest. Make sure everything is taken care with your family and spouse if you have one. When you get to the fleet i give you the same advice. Family affairs can make or break a Sailor. Same with financials.
Could you share some wisdom when it comes to financials. Is this about making sure bills don't go unpaid?

Does any security clearance happen before SNA/SNFO gets a pro-rec y? If not then do candidates when TS/SCI whammied like they might NAMI whammied?
My understanding is that the security clearance is done before OCS. It's not really a big deal, and its done in the background.
Some people get called for more info, others do not.
You don't often hear if it goes through or not because its almost never an issue.

Yep bills, mortgage, stocks. I dont have a family but alot of the time alot of the guys would be worried about tricare stuff with their kids....etc. if or when you get to a ship sometimes you dont have access to your account and can only talk to your spouse and family for a couple times a week (in my experience). Just good practice to have a day of checking everything when that day comes

From my own understanding and from what my recruiter shared is that a very basic background investigation is done before a pro-rec to make sure there are no major red flags, but the actual investigation and adjudication is done once you are selected. It's not very challenging to get a secret clearance, at least compared to a TS
