I think my parents would have been less supportive if we didn't have family friends who were prior OCS.
As I said before, I was off to get my PhD too, and my family was pretty confused why I turned down the opportunity. When I explained what I was doing, that I was pretty eh about academia, and the navy was one of the better branches for women, they seemed more down to clown with me joining the navy.
Your parents were down to clown ?

My whole family has been supportive of me being in the Navy but have absolutely no clue what I do after 10 years lol. I try to explain to them that I am applying for a promotion cause that’s all they can comprehend? they’re like don’t you already fly on planes. No… I fix the avionics systems. What’s avionics? Aviation electronics. What’s that? Idk like radar, comms, acoustics, ESM… you know what.. I fix radios. Ohhh ok, that’s cool! ?

However, my little brother joined a year after me and an AT as well so he’s extremely supportive and my husband was also an AT in the Navy (yes we’re one of those annoying Navy couples) but we’re 8 years strong so suck it! Lol. My husband has been an absolute blessing. He is my number one fan and cheerleader. We had our baby boy in May of 2020 during COVID and our older elementary aged kids were stuck at home doing online learning. I worked days he worked nights and we high fives half way through the day. All while I was doing school full-time to finish my Bachelors. I wouldn’t be here even at the point of applying if it weren’t for him and his support. I probably would have quit a long time ago. But here we are! I hope it all paid off!!

Okay y’all’s relationship is goals because that takes some serious balancing and commitment. Yeah my family has zero clue what I do even now haha. I don’t know if they could figure out my masters thesis if they tried. I’m always like I make maps which is definitely like the ultra watered down version of what I do. I don’t think my mom ever pictured her only child doing something other than a PhD. Haha I think she imagined her daughter working at NASA not her daughter wanting to be in the Navy. I think my mom is coming around and trying to understand a bit more though. But I will say this process did open my eyes because my ex made me choose him or applying. Haha so honestly I’m kind of thankful for this process because no one wants a partner who will not be supportive of their dreams.

My dad still wants me to join the Air Force, my mom thinks "Air Force" sounds like an aggressive name... So ok, and my sister wants me to have an office job for the rest of my life

Haha I wanna know how serious she was when she said the name sounds aggressive ?

Very serious! I tried explaining it to her, but she thinks it's the most violent branch in the military with the most ruthless bloodsucking psychos. If only she knew... ?
That is crazy lol it is the furthest from being that compared to the others. Everyone knows that is the United States Marine Corps.

I’m curious how supportive have your families been throughout the process for you all? Lol my family is not a fan ? They are pro I get my PhD.
My parents are the most supportive when it comes to my desire to be a Naval Officer and a pilot. My parents would be more disappointed if I don’t get pick up than me to be honest

Same thing happened to me. 3.5 year relationship done cause she made me choose. It sucks but I'm so much happier following my dreams now like you said!

Spouse support is so huge when going after difficulty goals. My wife has been amazing, she helps me study every night for sometimes 2 hours and watches the kids during the day so I can study.

If he was willing to give an ultimatum like that I’d say good riddance. And hey, who says you won’t work for nasa post navy?
