I couldn't tell ya man. My OR was trying to have me enlist first so I have a "better chance at getting selected", but that sounded like a trap right from the start... I was 27! I don't know how long an A school is, but I don't think it's 6 months lol. I noticed most AD guys who got selected are Petty Officers with up to 10 years of experience.
They say the best way to get picked up for pilot is you enlist as Undesignated seaman/airman. That way you get great experience for your resume and then you get to pick whatever job you wanna do.

I’ll caveat this by saying I am not an Officer recruiter nor have I ever been one but I feel like this advice is just bad. If you want to be a pilot then try and be a pilot. Most people who enlist first get sucked into that first/second tour life that is the Navy and don’t apply for OCS. Or they get out because 4 years cranking as an undes then striking and doing A school can be, a lack of better word, “ ball buster”

My advice would be to focus on getting your GPA and ASTB up as high as possible. And focus on getting quality appraisals for your package. I think that’s faster than enlisting and having to wait 1-2 years to apply.

As a prior devil dog hopefully going SNA Navy, I think being enlisted is a great way to grow up a bit in your 20s. It also helps with college if you get out and use your GI bill and will make you a better officer since you will go in more mature with better leadership abilities and qualities that were forged into you. But there are different routes that work for different people.

Absolutely under no circumstances should you enlist first. You have to get CO recommendation for your package and your chief mess will shut it down cause they need to get “their time” out of you first.
I disagree, I have learned a great deal from being enlisted and wouldn’t change my experience for anything. From my 10 year experience, 6 years of that being a first class, the only people that had OCS applicants shot down were those that failed to continue sustained superior performance. Not once did I have a Chief give me crap about wanting to become an Officer. They only told me that I would be better utilized in the Mess which isn’t part of my goals and they respected that

With you 100%, except finish your degree while you’re in. It essentially allows you to lose 0 time in the long term for retirement!

My last tour in the Corps was on recruiting. I decided to get out after and gave up a promotion to Staff by not re enlisting to go to school. I should have went out to the fleet and finished school then applied, things happen though.

I have to strongly disagree. My CO and chief mess was incredibly happy to help me. My CO reached out to his boss to set up an interview with our base captain, my chief mess was the driving force for me getting my application in and when I wasn’t selected my first submission they sat me down and asked what could be done to improve my chances.
