31OCT22 SNA/SNFO BOARD

I mean I wouldn’t say “yikes” it’s just the reality.

A few aviators I spoke to say this happens in cycles, where the Navy goes at one point “oh shit we need pilots” and they turn on the faucet, then they take too much and everything gets all backed up and they get more competitive and selective. COVID also didn’t really help things, albeit many other factors.

Timing truly is everything, and who you know, and your scores.

I’m not trying to sound morbid, it’s just your chances are smaller if they’re really selecting 80/280.

This very selective process doesn't go away either. Once you're in then you'll be competing with your class for aircraft preference, and then down the road in the fleet you'll be competing for promotions and whatnot. Just part of the game. And yes yes I know people are gonna come at me with that's different because at least I'm in the navy and that's true. Just keep in mind you'll be competing for everything and that starts now. Especially if this is a hyper competitive low select board.

I mean 80/280 is roughly 28.5% of applicants getting selected. That's better than most enlisted advancement. So it’s not really that bad.
yeah I did the math on that and thought that the upper third or so sounds reasonable and not low select but I don’t know how many get selected normally.

Check the spreadsheet - you can see who has been selected and what their scores are for the past few boards.

from what I saw it doesn’t seem like scores seem to matter too much unless they’re very low. idk about the 80 outta 280, guess that’s low but who knows if it’s even true. plenty of peoples recruiters told them this board was canceled haha!

I mean big facts.

My recruiter told me plenty of lies when I enlisted, then got pissed when I caught him in one red handed.

Like I said - the only people that truly know anything are sitting in that room staring at the TV with everyone’s paperwork on it.

yeah, I think it’s a good chance the 80/280 thing is just an unsubstantiated rumor but it’s always a crapshoot either way.

It’s not letting me edit, but if anyone wants to add my info I have 62 7-6-7 going for NFO. 3.45 GPA. My recruiter just let me know it shows at-board.

Many many years ago there used to be swings as they didn't limit the number of applications (the spots to fill remained fairly constant board to board), then they started enforcing the application cap, that meant at worst the selection rate would be 67% unless the board let spots go unfilled.

Then they had the issue a year ago with the significant over-selection and stopped enforcing the cap for aviation due to not sure if boards were cancelled or not.

When things get back to normal that system should be in place again.

If they truly taking 80, subtract about 8 from that considering the ISPP applicants take from the top of that number.
